It has been a rough couple of weeks around our place but this little girl is doing well . She is pictured at one week and gaining fast. We lost her dam at 23 hrs so been her and me ever since. I miss her momma so much but she is a sweet girl and pretty special.

We have an orphan too, lost the mare 6 hours after foaling. Our filly is doing well, however, she is scared to death to be outside of the barn even with me standing in the paddock with her. I can't leave her out. Ideally, I wish I could have found her a nurse mare or a buddy foal from the beginning. She has not really bonded to our other older fillies or the one pony mare we have. We lowered the stall wall so the orphan filly could interact easier and bond but so far it has not worked. When we try to turn her out with the pony, the orphan is so scared that is tries to bust open the gate or jump out.

I'm at a loss. She can't spend the rest of her life in a stall or running the barn aisle. If we had the finances I would buy some used round pen panels to attach to the barn door and set it up so she could go out on her on are be in the barn.

Your filly looks great. Does she have a buddy? Guess she has been outside all this time to be comfortable with being out?

I would suggest getting a goat for your orphan. The goat wont hurt the baby at all and can live 24/7 with that baby and help instill confidence.

She has her sister in the pen next to her, she is a little scared of the bigger horses but starting to warm up to them now. She has a stall and a pen so is use to being outside I lock her in stall at night and now once it gets dark she won't come out. I bet yours will slowly get use to things and start being more comfortable sorry about your mare as well. It has been a rough year on breeders. Would love to see your baby.

Yes, she can interact with my Welsh pony mare over the connecting stall wall. We took boards out to make the wall shorter. I have been letting her out in the aisle everyday while I clean stalls and do chores. Everytime I try taking her out of the barn for turnout she just gets so scared even with me and the pony standing in the paddock with her. All she wants to do is get back to the barn, it's really sad, she is 5 weeks old now and I'm getting concerned about how this is going to affect her physically and mentally.

Today, I just couldn't stand it anymore and took apart some dog kennels and attached a turn out area to the back of the barn. She can either be in the aisle or in her stall or go outside. Well it has been 4 hours and she still has not gone out of the barn. The pony is in a stall in the barn. I'm thinking tomorrow I will try letting the pony have the same area with the filly and see how it goes.

I would attach a pic but my computer will not resize small enough.

Beautiful filly, sorry about your mare. Raising a baby can be done, its tough, but can do. Ive raised three bucket foals, long hours but if you get the right formulia, some can be left hanging longer than others. That way you can actually have a work life away from the barn. Mix milk formula, hang in bucket and they will drink along. I usually did breakfast, lunch, dinner, midnite snack...etc. And each interaction came with lots of loving. Funny, the last one bonded with his huge 16+ hand half brother. Funny to see them touching noses thru the fence. But i do agree, get a buddy of some sort.

I raised one other on a bottle and we had one who we ended up putting on a mare and that worked out really well. So far this one is being very good I am trying not to spoil her and not let her get out of line. She eats from a bucket and pretty much just goes to her spot to eat and behaves but not every time! I feed every two hours until midnight then I go 3 hours until 6 a.m then back to two hours. I am home all the time so it works I don't have a job job just ride, foal mares out and breed mares. Once she gets a little older I will stretch it out more. I am hoping her sister will take her and be buddies. She already had one this spring for a friend.
