Ever been that person that just needed to take a young horse into different enviroments to see the sights? Or been visiting someone from out of town and want to check out what they're doing? 
No worries :). I didn't think you did. I just wanted to make sure I didn't sound as if I minded someone riding. A signed waiver would put me at ease greatly. And just to update she ended up asking me if I could squeeze her in for a session as well. So I did gain a student (for today at least). |

Exactly what I was thinking.
I can't relate to all the people who said it would bother them that the friend is getting free use of the arena. I would not have ever been able to ride growing up if everyone thought that way. People were always super welcoming about inviting us to come ride and now that I have an arena of my own I make sure to extend the invitation to others.
If you want to be nice and extend the use of your arena to the friend, then I would let her ride any time you're NOT giving lessons. Personally, I think it would be a distraction and would not want them in the arena at the same time as the lesson. JMO In this sue happy world, it's hard to be nice any more. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I wouldn't mind free use of the arena while the lesson was taking place but I would for sure have the friend sign a waiver or a disclaimer and be sure to make it crystal clear that it is a trial run and that next time she will have to pay a small fee. I can just see that horse finding the only soft spot in the arena and slipping.... Then your kindness would for sure get you in trouble.
I love helping people out and I invite people to my place all the time for free useage of my acreage for trail riding and relaxing with their horses. But, each horse that steps off a trailer has to have a recent coggins and I even make friends sign waivers each year. I am paranoid I guess, but we all still have fun. It allows me to enjoy their company knowing that if anything truly accidental happened I would be covered. |

Say someone is paying you for lessons. They want to bring a friend+horse (that is not paying for lessons) with them. Friend just wants to ride around in the arena while lesson is taking place. Would you be okay with it?
absolutely not. Unless they sign waivers and pay an arena fee. |

| In my state there is a law meant to protect equine activity sponsors from liability. This sign is posted at my arena and most any other in the area.. but how much does it actually protect us? Anyone with legal knowledge care to comment?

In California...you CANNOT post that disclaimer. You have to have them sign/initial a waiver because if they say they did not see posted sign, you are still liable. |

In California...you CANNOT post that disclaimer. You have to have them sign/initial a waiver because if they say they did not see posted sign, you are still liable.
I have this posted at my front gate as well as on all my pasture gates and at my barn door. However, if the person who got injured even says they never saw the sign, they MAY still win in court. I'd rather not go to court at all. I'd rather present a notarized waiver along with pictures of each sign that are clearly not newly hung to the judge so he/she can say case dismissed....
Had a friend get sued by another friend and it was nasty. She only had signs up. I'm all for helping people and letting people use my land free of charge but in todays world i'd rather be safe than sorry.  |

Location: WI | Sounds like it doesn't bother the person taking the lesson. So sure. Maybe charge a haul in fee of $5-10. A lot of arenas around here do that. |
