Now that it's summer I am hauling my young one a lot more , riding and competing more, etc. on top of it I have new neighbors that just bought the property next to mine. They hauled in about 20 head of horses and small herd of cattle all in one day. My horses can't rub noses or anything but they are close with a lot of commotion. Let's just say these people are of a certain group that like to " match race " horses not of the official race track version. Lol the way they handle horses is very rough and when I feed my horses theirs go absolutely nuts pawing the fence running around crazy etc. they only feed once a day from what I can see. Dry lotted. Stallions are locked in small pens with solid 10 foot high walls and go nuts 24/7. Lol so after speaking with my vet she recommended I keep my ex race horse 5 year old on a small dose of omeprazole daily until things quiet down or forever if I chose to. She carries a compounded version that is buffered and works really well. 85.00 for a 120 scoop container at maintenance dose or 30 scoops treatment. I use the herbal preventative as well but fear my track baby is going to need more supoort. Vets says it's fine to give low dose daily. Anyone have an opinion?? Thanks.

I did it for 3 year on my mare. Gave 10cc compound omeprazole daily, 20 on the road. Since starting Cur Ost stomach I have not needed omeprazole at all. I also use Acid FX by equine choice on the road.

Not near enough land!!!! Lolol. It's about 15 acres I think. There is room but we do not share the same philosophy on the care of equines. Lol

And to respond to the other post above I tried curost stomach for a while but I am seeing better results with finish line U7 and that's what my horse was on at the track.

I've never tried U7 but will have to keep that name handy because you just never know!

But ultimately in response to the omeprazole question -- I never saw negative impact... in fact, the low dose omeprazole is what kept us competing. Within days of her not having it we would be back at square one.

I keep my horses on THE GastroPLUS  daily.  They feel great! I never switched to the blend because I know my horses are nervous nelly's and it probably wouldn't be strong enough and I didn't want to take the risk to find out if it wasn't concentrated enough. I know they could have made something custom for me but I find it just easier to keep things simple.

My mare is a very nervous girl and has been on a low mainenance dose for about a year and like someone else said I can tell a difference if I don't give it for a few days. Good luck with your new neighbors.

My horse got blister beetle poisioning, and he has to be on ompeprozale daily for basically the remainder of his life. The compunded powder from your vet is the cheapest, compaired to gastroguard, or gastroaid. It works best if you put a scoop of powder in the syringe (two scoops at first for a week), and mix with a TINY bit of water and then shake up and give orally. If you put it on their feed sometimes they don't get it all and it's not so affective. I, myself, take ompeprozale every day. And it doesn't have any bad effects on me! Good luck!

I used to use the powdered version you could buy from Douglas GOrdon on this site. I just used his protocol with this version, I put the dose in a TINY bit of feed and let him eat that at first. THen I fill waters and do other things for a few then feed rest of feed. I hope this is working. I may try your idea of syringe and maybe give it in evening s after they eat. Thanks!

You should google side effects for omeprazole in humans. I assume same side effects in horses. I would recommend using it as little as possible.
