I have a gelding that I'm trying to bring back from some hoof/back issues. I've had the chiropractor out to work on him, his hooves are about clear (one more trim and they should be good to go) and he's had the saddle on him a few times. He's not usually one to buck unless you tick him off messing with his mouth (pulling too hard, being too 'direct') as he prefers neck reining, or if you put your leg on him too much (he's pretty sensitive) but I want him to work with the saddle without me on him for a while to get some muscles back. Problem is, he won't lunge. He did when I bought him, but now he stands there and looks at me like I'm an idiot. No amount of leading him in to it, or getting after him with the whip, or making him yield will move him. Is there something I can do to make him lunge or should I just give up and work him on the lead until he's ready to have me up there?

Location: Oklahoma		Go get a flag whip, ( stock whip w flag) at feed store for pushing cows. Its only 5' so works great on a 10-12' line . Usually active shaking makes them go fwd from the noise, and if you have to get after him w it, it doesn't bite as no lash. It's all I use free lunging or lunging on a line in the roundpen. I have one very lazy gelding who is whip n spur impervious , flagging works.

That may work, but he's pretty bombproof. We had a loose tarp blow on to us while we were riding one time and he kept right on working. I'm going out to TSC this week so I may have to look at those :)
