My horses are all healthy however I am looking for the very best in preventative maintenance. I have 4 mares - ages 5, 8, 9 & 14 and one 3 year old gelding.

Right now they are on ForeFront Equine Fore74, hay, fresh grass and of course good clean water. They get ForeFront Equine ForeRunner before events/stress.

They all get regular exercise and legs hosed down after each ride.

What are you must haves in preventative care? In your trailer, products, magnetics...what is it?

Everyone has so many different opinions and would love to just start a thread!

Thank you!!!

I love all PHT and CuHorse products.
My mare is 10 and I have her on Adequan for maintenance, but she has no history of lameness.
I also like the Sore No More line of liniments and poultice.
I love MVP Exceed 6 way...and their products. Need a discount? Contact me.

So far, those are about the only things I'd endorse.

My horses legs and body get Vetrolin'd after every ride. He will get poulitced if he had a hard work out or after a race.

When racing he is on injectable glucosamine. In the next year I will prob start him on Pentosan.

They are turned out 24/7, grained once a day, and have free choice hay, supplement with a flake each of alfalfa.

I think the biggest thing you can do for prevention is scrutinize your workout program at home.

Flame away, my horses don't wear boots at home unless we're roping or making actual runs. Regular arena work and slow barrel work they get bell boots. Pasture work they don't get anything. I think it builds strong legs and strengthens all the little supporting muscles (if you've ever weightlifted, using a machine is FAR easier than free weights. You target the main muscle group but the machine does all the work for the smaller supporting muscle groups. Boots do the same thing IMO). We have a very low injury rate.

I do a lot of pasture work on hills as opposed to arena work. I think it builds a strong mind and a strong body. I truly think a good workout/fitness regimen at home is truly the key.

Feed wise my favorite is Mag Max by Oxygen as an overall supplement, especially for the digestive support and added magnesium. I've started taking magnesium myself and notice a bit difference in how much faster my muscles recover, legs especially feel great.

I agree, when I was competing I rode my horses down the road, on cattle through the brush and very seldom in the arena, except for roping practice. Never had any soundness problems with them. The only time they had boots on were roping practice and when competing or making a hard run in the practice pen. We didn't have stalls either, just pasture and some smaller pens. I think they walked a lot of stiffness out in the pasture. We did hose them off and if worked hard, put some liniment on their legs.

A great shoer will save you money in the long run. A not so great one will cost you a ton in vet bills.

For us, PHT and now MagnaCu by PHT are the Must Have products in our program. The MagnaCu line is unbelievable!

Supplement wise, I am a THE fan.

This! A long time ago my vet told me that the more you wear support boots the weaker the tendons/ligiments. I only use bells and split boots during any time of work at home, or polo wraps. I save support boots for actual runs.

PHT user here, cold hose are my best friends usually. As far as upkeep, a great farrier will do wonders, Chiro, massages, MagnaWave, etc. Cur-OST has also been a save-all in my barn.

eta: I do love my Equisport massager!

My farrier and massage therapist are the best and without them my horse wouldn't be where he is. So they are huge in my book. A good chiro also as needed.

I feed FORCO to my gelding who is 13 and its helpful, when he eats it. he is the world's pickiest eater. I also love the Sore No More products and use the gel and liniment often after harder workouts.

I also don't wrap or boot up at home unless running a pattern. I also believe it helps with their general strength.

I have debated adequan or something as my gelding is getting older but he is such a picky eater and a little gunshy about doing "too much."

Good nutrition and a farrier go a long way in my opinion.
