Location: KS | My mare has been out at my grandparents land since I had my baby. I haven't seen my mare in a month. Well, she got shoes on this morning and we noticed a bad cut under her fetlock. It's already infected and her leg is swollen. My farrier told us not to take her to the vet because they will just say to run cold water on it to reduce swelling & to clean it. My question is, what would you do or use to clean a wound like that?? Should I wrap it?? Iodine, bute, vetericyn?? Should I just take her to the vet?? |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Since its infected, I would take her in so she can get the right treatment for the infection, if there was no infection I would have just treated it myself.. |

| Is she up to date on her tetanus? I would also, just call the vet and ask if its okay to give her a round about of penicillin or what antibiotics he would recommend. Cold hose it, trying to keep it clean is going to be a nightmare with where its at. Clean it at least twice a day and do put wound cream?vetryicin on it....
Honestly talk with your vet though. Infections on the leg can go south in a hurry. |

| At the very least call your vet and get some antibiotics and talk to them about it and see what they think.
If it were me, I'd take it to the vet no question just to be on the safe side. Infection isn't something to mess with, especially on/ near a fetlock because of all the movement in that joint.

Location: The Great Northwest | Infection in joint areas are a call for an appointment now to the vet. You need to get on top of the infection quickly before it infects a joint. |

Location: Sperry, OK | Depending on your definition of "bad" and the location on the fetlock.. it could involve the tendon sheaths that run very close to the skin in that area. If it is infected and there has been a nick or scape in a tendon sheath, you will be in big trouble if you don't go to the vet. If that was your kid, would you listen to your shoe salesman's advise on medical care? |

Location: Texas | any sort of distal limb lacerations ours get go to the vet ASAP. I don't wait to see if the joint(s) or tendon sheath(s) will be affected |

It needs to be cleaned and debrided to see how deep it is and what is affected - sedation will likely be needed. Only then can you and the vet decide on a course of action. |
