Location: Where you need a paddle... Oregon! | I might be inheriting a Marlene McRae Special Effx saddle from my daughter. I have never ridden it on my mare - only hers - and her mare is a tall thoroughbred who moves nothing like my horse. I think it's very comfortable and was thinking about using it as a trail saddle.
What can you tell me about what kind of horse these saddles fit best?
What's the best type of saddle pad to use with one. I have a 5 Star, and she has an Impact Gel that I might get with the saddle.

| I have one and it is one of my favorite saddles to ride. I use it on my stocky built horse with a 1 inch think wool pad. I actually bought it years ago for another stocky horse I had that I had trouble with saddles rolling on. This one stays put.

Location: Jersey Girl | I just bought a Cactus Marlene in November. Only got to ride in it twice tho before health issues prevented me from riding. It was one of the only saddles that fit my horse and I liked how it rode. |

Location: Where you need a paddle... Oregon! | Thanks for the input so far. I've never had a flex tree and never ridden my horse in one. I'm looking forward to trying it out on her. I'll probably use the Impact Gel pad, simply because I want to save the life in my 5 Star for other types of riding than trails. |

| I have one. Did not fit my wide mare at all but OK on most horses. VERY comfortable, but mine fell apart....poorly made. The conchos at the back of the jockey seat came out and the holes are stripped so cannot replace them without sending it in to Circle Y and I assume that I would have to pay to have their crappy product fixed. |

I need it to ride the daughters horse tonight, but tomorrow I'm going to clean it up and work the rough out up. The horn is damaged but that happened in the trailer and had nothing to do with the saddle itself. I'll probably just vetwrap it until I can have it releathered.

Location: Peg-Leg Julia Grimm | I have two of them. The first one I bought has a wider tree which worked really well on all my horses. I liked it so much I bought a second hand one that was fancier, a newer model. Never thinking before hand that it might not have the same fit as the first one. It has a narrower tree than the first one. It only fits well on a narrow TB built horse. Even flex tree saddles will have some difference between them apparently.  |

One site says it's a 16.5 inch seat, where the other one says 13.5 (haven't measured it yet - but I'm thinking it's 13.5). And the seat color is wrong on one site because it's black suede, not the one the site says it should be. The site that says it's a 16.5 seat also says its a wide tree, so not sure if that's accurate or not.
The code is 118613530102
Still not sure what year it was made. |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | I had one I bought new in 99 and LOVED it. But leaving it in the hot trailer made the flex part of the tree warp after several years and it was no longer functioned correctly. Which is unfortunate because it was one of the best riding saddles ever. I had bought a newer one at some point but sold it immediately because it was not the same saddle at all. |

That is model 1186 13.5" seat. Made in Jan 02
might be a good fitter. Are the stirrups hung on rings or through the tree? I have had quite a few, they all fit different. The older ones hung through rings fit the very best. Love mine, fits almost everything. Including flat backed horses. I have another that is hung on rings, but it is narrower. Go figure. Terrible workmanship, my hubby has had to repair lost conches and screws, but the saddle itself is a dream. Mine has a 4" cantle, which is odd for the year, most were 3" back then. (Like my other one) |

I actually lost the concho on mine and I called them and they sent me a new one free of charge. I'm almost curious to know if they build the Circle Y saddles in different places because some of them are a pretty good quality and some of them are junk. I have an XP Bell that is a really nice made saddle, but I've looked at a Lisa Lockhart model that was pretty much stapled together. |
