| Question for those of you that run to the left barrel first and are right handed...
How do you go to the whip on your run home?
-Do you let go of the reins for that split second it takes to get your whip and switch hands?
-Do you whip left handed?
I need some sort of help. By the time I get myself situated I am probably half way home.
I was letting go of the reins but errrmmmmmmmm that just doesn't seem like the safest option in the world?
Give me your knowledge. |

Location: IM A DUDE!!!!!!! | your over and under should lay on the side of which barrel you go first. If you go to the right barrel first, it should lay on your right side. that way after turning the third barrel you just move your hand down the horn and grab it.....if you go to the left, lay the over and under on the left side |

Location: Idaho | I am horribly uncoordinated when it comes to using an over and under, and as you said, normally you're halfway home before you grab it. Even between barrels, its still hard and then my timing is off lol But I found what does work for me is a quirt. You can wrap it around your wrist, you can still ride, not have to worry about it and when you need to whip, bam it's there. No scrambling to find it, and it doesn't get in the way of you making that run. Of course this is my opinion! lol

Location: Texas | I struggled with that when I switched to the left. I use a whip and not an over and under so I just made myself carry it in my left hand and after a while I got used to it. |

| I use to rubber band it to my belt loop but found that I sat up too much.
I now tuck it under the excess of my breastcollar tug strap and run it through the ring, easy to find.
But yes, I would practice finding it at home with your left hand... |

Location: Oklahoma | I let go of the reins. I do this between 2 & 3 as well if my horse shuts me out going to 2nd.
Also, not all horses run on the way home. Some are lazy, or push style. |

Oh I think I get it because (If you go to the right barrel first) when you're coming home your left hand will be on the rein so you would have to switch hands to get to the whip |

Ooh I like this idea... will have to try that out.
I was running with a quirt, but I honestly cannot tell you how many of them I have lost. I think I just need to train my left hand to become more dominant for this situation. |

Some horses give it their all.
Some need a fire lit under them.
This is not a post asking whether or not I should whip? |

Location: 31 lengths farms | I bought a quirt that I can put around my wrist or around a finger, I like it around my finger, that way I simply close my hand and its in my hand rather than even having to fish for it around my wrist. Took some getting used to over and undering left handed but in a small pen it made more sense than switching hands after leaving 3rd to pick up the whip. I run 2 lefties. Been so long since I've run a righty I'd probably have trouble whipping right handed now...

Location: Texas | I used to rubber band my quirt to my middle finger. Or you can practice switching hands at home just walking around. I know it looks goofy but it worked for me. I prefer an over under. Go to the office supply store and get some big rubber bands. Put them around your upper thigh and run your over under through it. That way it's in the same place every time and you don't have to look to find it or fish for it! I keep my over under on the right side no matter what.

| Switch to two hands for a stride coming out of 3rd, then grab it with your right hand. It is easier then dropping the reins, and much safer! |
