Location: Where the buffalo roam | For a quick hardener to get them by until nature kicks in - melt 2 or 3 mothballs in a coffee can (be very, very careful they are flammable) and then hold the foot up and pour the liquid on the sole. Once again - BE VERY CAREFUL - you do not want to get it directly on the frog or let it run onto the hairline as it will burn them. I had a rope horse that would get tender after every shoe job regardless of what we did and this worked for him. The heat forces the blood away from the foot (or something like that) and the mothball liquid hardens like a rock. They melt super easy - we have always just lit some paper in a safe place and that is enough heat to melt them. You have to be fairly quick about it. Now your horse will smell like a cedar chest! |

Location: wolverton,mn | Turpentine,not paint thinner,turpentine. It's the same ingredient in " magic cushion" by Absorbine. It's just better and been around for a long time. |

Location: wolverton,mn | If its his soles,the turp will work. If its that the shoer cut into the soft laminae and hoof wall too much,talk to him,ask.
Unless everyone else knows the situation ,it can't be the answer to " get a different shoer"

| I've got a can of relevere (sp) in my tack room as well, it was given to me by a friend who had a navicular horse. The directions on it say to only apply to the bottom of the hoof to toughen it up. I may give it a try on this horse. I'll have to look at the ingredients. The smell is so strong, I keep the can in a big sock. I try and keep their feet moisturized since it's so hot and dry, I flood the water trough a few times a week and I use rainmaker on their hooves about every few days

I don't think he'd tell me if he did to be honest... he was in a big hurry that day he trimmed him, showed up 2 hours late (again) and told me he only had time to do 1 of my horses, I had all 3 scheduled. I picked my horse because I wanted to go rope Tuesday. I saw him walking tender that evening at feed time.. so I put off the roping tried to get on today and it seemed like pure torture for him to step out. |

All the old timers I know use Turpentine for a hardener...
OP give him time and he will be ok, but if this happen to one of mine I would not even try to ride for at least a week. Glad to hear that you are listening to your horse  |

All the old timers I know use Turpentine for a hardener...OP give him time and he will be ok, but if this happen to one of mine I would not even try to ride for at least a week. Glad to hear that you are listening to your horse
Thank you... I know he will get better, this isn't the first time he's been sore after a trim.. (same dude) it just use to be the first day after the trim, then he'd be good. If he's not any better come Friday evening, I won't push it. Not worth it to me. |

I know some people would just bute and go run. I have had a few that got sore after trims too back in the day because my farrier that I had no choice of useing back then was just a lazy monkeys butt. |

I can't imagine doing that to him, he's all I got! He was hesitating to follow me back into the pasture to ride, I should have known then he was still too sore, he never hesitates on me. |
