Location: Somewhere around here | For those of you who run with a dressage whip, how do you ride with it? Rubber band it to your horn or hand, or what? I'm terrible holding onto my whip and my reins at the same time, I always feel like I have way too much on my hands and end up dropping the whip or rein. It doesn't help that I have small hands. Any tips? |

| If I run with one I typically hold it in my mouth. I've done the rubber band but I felt like my horse watched the whip too much (and I have pictures to prove it) on top of struggling to keep reins sorted out.
Now I carry one to the gate to get my super push style horse rolling into the arena and drop it in the alley. |

| I use a rubberband and loop it wound the whip and over the knuckles of my hand and back over the top of the whip. Then you can open your hand and not drop it. I will see if I can find a picture. |

Location: NE Texas | ^^^^This....or I rubberband it to my middle finger. Same thing, you can open and close your hand, hold your reins, whatever, and never have to worry about it being in the way or dropped. Horses never know I even have it with me b/c the end is toward the ground or back toward their hip. I love the dressage whips b/c they are super quick and all you have to do is flick your wrist to use it. Doesn't require any change in upper body position.

| Yes place whip through the rubber band, then stretch it across your knuckles and back over the top of the whip, I will say a hair tie is less painful to use as I like mine tight, I came out of the arena with purple knuckles a few times before I discovered the hair tie trick. |

Here's how I do mine. (Imagine the pen being a whip. :) ) I've never had any trouble with it at all and never notice it during a run.

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | I made a leather loop and taped one side to the whip handle. Then put a hair tie on it, leaving a finger loop at the top that I can easily loosen or tighten. I like it on my index finger. |

| Most of us use an over and under, but if we use a whip we use a bat. It comes with a loop.
Edited to add that an over and under is always on your saddle, you do not have to worry about loosing it, or remembering it. I keep one one every saddle.

| Just a thought - and a perspective given to me when I wanted to carry a handwhip. A lady who helped me a lot said that until I'm comfortable enough with my horse to where holding on to a whip wasn't going to be a burden in any fashion then stick with an over and under. In this sport the .001 seconds fiddling with the whip while running will add up over time.
So I gave it time until I got super comfortable and am really glad for it! |

| I use rubber band, but unlike what I've read I only put it around my pointer finger. I wrap the rubber band around the whip until it's tight, but loose where I can slip my pointer fingers in. It never moves, and have never had any issues grabbing the rein or saddle horn. |

| After running with my whip rubber band to my finger I will never run with a wrist strap kind of whip again. It never moves inside my hand, and honestly I would pick running with my dressage whip over an over n under. Since ever .001 counts, for me reaching down to find my over n under takes longer than using my whip that is already in my hand.

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I put a hair tie around my hand and around the whip. Like the above photo with the pen. Works well. I haven't ran with a whip in a while. My boy is more of a free runner. My previous gelding was on the track so i used it on his shoulder. Way better response. I didn't have to move my hand while running, just turned my wrist up and down to make contact with his shoulder. Takes too much time to reach all the way to his behind. And since my old boy was off hte track the shoulder was what he was used to being encouraged on. |

Location: CTX | I wrap a hair tie on around the whip till it's snug and then stick my thumb through it. I can grab reins and horn without any issue, but still have the whip when I need it. |
