I got shingles while in college. I was 22! Pretty painful. Felt like someone punched my arm a million times, and my entire arm where the rash was ached. I was going to school to be a teacher, and couldn't go to the school until my rash went away. It was kind of crazy. Anyways, I was prescribed a pill and it cleared up. Haven't had it since but sometimes the same arm will ache like it did when I had the rash. I was told I got it young because of stress.

Several years ago my husband had them -- the typical band of them around his body. Fortunately the nurse at his work site knew immediately what it was and sent him directly to his doctor who prescribed Valtrex. My husband is a big, strong, tough guy but he suffered -- said it was the most painful thing he had ever endured. If you ever suspect shingles go immediately to the doctor to get started on the medication -- otherwise you can end up dealing with shingles off and on forever. Husband and I got the Singles vaccination a few years ago and are glad we did. I did not want to ever endure what he did and he did not want to endure it again. Doctor believes husband's was triggered due to stress and fatigue -- working lots of hours on a major project, etc.

Its funny that you mention stress because I have a small patch of shingles that breaks out on my elbow area
(back of my forearm really
) every now and then. I always called it my "
poverty
rash" because it only shows up when I am super stressed about some money issue :

I use cold compresses, rest, no stress, and take acyclivor 5x a day to shorten symptoms. If you have it around the eye, consider it to be very serious and seek medical attention quickly. Try to keep the area clean. Wash your hands regularly. Gabapentin works some on the nerve pain. It is a drug generally used for diabetic nerve pain.
