Just got a 3 year old to start riding.  Broke but knows very little.  What is your favorite bit to start a young horse?  I see a hundred different o-rings but don't know what the difference is between the $10 bit and the $50 ones. Suggestions?

I like D rings, and I use a smooth mouth one first. I don't have a particular brand

Difference is what they are made out of. I am fond of my french link brass and copper o ring for my three year old. Your cheaper bits are typically nickel plated which is the least durable.

it basically depends on the shape and width of your horse's mouth. I ride my mare in a smooth mouth eggbutt snaffle with a lozenge its a 5 1/4" mouth made by Tolklat. I ride my youngest in a 4.5" mouth D ring low port level 1 myler with the barrel mouth. I'll try to attach pics of both.

I have a smooth and a twisted wire tom balding. I think they were well worth the money, I have friends who come over and ride and ask if they can use my baldings, i have cheap ones imo they don't compare

Dave Elliott bits are the best. When you use one you can feel the difference. For colts, I use an Elliott o-ring with 3 piece smooth mouth. I never use only 2 piece mouths because they can put too much pressure and be uncomfortable.

I like to start in a side pull but the bit that I have fallen in love with is the wtp eggbutt snaffle. Its the bit only bit I use on my colts now. They quit playing with it and accept it I'd say 90% faster than any other bit I've used. The faster they accept it the faster we can get to work.

I start all of mine in a rope halter and then transition to a western D Ring. Over the years I've started in egg butt, o-ring, full cheek, etc and honestly I couldn't tell any difference, they all came along just fine.

Besides a bosal. If you must and a little hard to find. HOLLOW MOUTH egg butt snaffle. A jewel very few know about.

Ditto - once you use a balding snaffle, you won't use any other. I like a ring snaffle to start mine, but that is just my preference.

Great quality, GREAT company. I use and own several of their bits
