I will be picking up my 2yo Futurity prospect from the trainer at the end of the month. I have never owned a futurity horse. What do you do with them for the "off-time" before they go back into training in the spring? Haul to see the sights? Trails? Groundwork? Leave them alone?

She is a beast at over 15.2h already so i want to make sure she gets what she needs to mature both physically and mentally. Thanks!!

A Rest!! You have to give these babys a break or you wont have a horse left. Turn her out and let her physically and mentally unwind, breath, mature some and re-charge.

mine aren't usually started until late fall or spring of 3. But I did have a colt started late last summer and he was in pasture most of the time through the winter with other horses. I got him in every now and again on the nice days and worked him. He's super smart and remembers everything and stays broke even with a lot of time off.

I bought her already started so i want to make sure she gets the right winter activities to have a long healthy career. She will go back to the trainer in March/April but i didnt want her to get rusty, if that might happen, or overstress her body, either.

I would haul and tie to the trailer here and there. Obviously if she gets too wound leave her home but seeing the sights without the stress of riding might help combat some of the road jitters for the future.
