Prospects and ground

I have been fortunate enough the horses I run have been able to run on all types of ground- deep, hard, slick, whatever. However I have a friend who claims her horse cannot run in deep ground and it slows him down 0.5-1 second off what he otherwise would be- based on typical horses he usually can hang with.
Is there anyway to tell when purchasing a prospect how they will handle that type of ground? I have always wondered if these horses who "cannot run in deep ground" were made to work in that type of ground- would they figure it out?

RE: Prospects and ground
Well obviously breeding and conformation would play a big role as that determines a lot of a horses turn style in my opinion and to a level conditioning is also a factor but, just like people, some are better suited than others to certain things. I don't think there is a sure fix on it. I do think conditioning in deeper ground helps as it they learn to adapt things but there is only so much adapting that can be done. I don't think there is a sure way to determine that until they start running. I think one is they are heavy on the front that really hinders them in deep ground as they tend not to pick their feet up enough and drag dirt with their toes. Again just my opinion
