I searched but didn't see anything on BHW.

I have a horse that gets vacciantions twice a year. Owner splits them up - spring he gets the 5 way plus west nile, and the fall is rabies + rhino. I don't think he's had a reaction becasue this is the first year I have been around him while getting vacc'd. He is boarded by the owner and I ride him 2-3 times a week and then race on the weekends. He gets turned out in a dry lot for a couple of hours/day. Mostly a stall dweller and he is ok with it, never stocked up before. I think that is all the history you may need, anything else, please ask. :)
Here is how the weekend went:
Friday picked him up, goes in 'his' stall - ate his dinner, hay, etc
Saturday morning, we left for the race at 7, tied to a trailer, typical warm up and run, left and got home at 8. went into a stall.
Sunday morning - let out to pasture at 8am and got to spend the day outside grazing until about 4:30 when I brought them in. DInner and extra hay later on.
Monday morning - fed, extra hay before I left for work; vet appointment at 3:30, got rabies and rhino vaccine. Looked over for health certificate and was deemed healthy and looked great. Took him back to his boarding barn and deropped off about 7pm.
Tuesday - didn't hear anything from the barn manager so regulare schedule of being fed and turn out on the dry lot. I get there about 4:30 to check in on him. No riding becasue of vaccinations Monday. I figured he would be stiff, ther norm.

When I pulled him out bith back legs were swollen (stocked up) from about a few inches from the hock down to his fetlock. I called the vet just to let them know this happened, not lame at a walk or trot. Eating, drinking seems normal, ate his bute powdered dinner last night. Seems a little stiff all over but we expected that. He said it was uncommon but not impossible to have a reaction to the vaccination. Bute for a couple of days and cold hosing. Let them know what's going on by Thursday evening. i, of course, will be going by to check on him tonight.

The bad thing is that we have state finals next week Thursday evening through Sunday, and I am praying it's nothing else and this will go away. Good thoughts would be appreciated.

Has anyone ever had this type of reaction to vaccines before?

I have not had a reaction to vaccines before and we just did ours last weekend. But I have had that reaction when a horse ingests hoary alyssum. Can be in hay or pasture but sounds like he is on a dry lot.

I have one horse that has an reaction every year to vaccines. But her reaction is she gets a slight fever and will quit drinking water. Which led to an impaction the first year that it happened. I now split up vaccines and do the a couple weeks apart and give banimine day before, day of, and day after shot. So far this has prevented any impaction the last couple years. so reactions do happen!

Hoping you get your issues resolved quickly!

Several of my horses have had this reaction to the rabies vaccine.  I just gave them a little bute or banamine and cold hosed.  Took several days to go down.

Some times we all need a reminder of the toxic stress shock a horse goes thru with the multitude of vaccines that are marketed for profit and not for the actual good of the horse.

This shot contains the only diseases that will give immunity for life to your horse but are "recommended" to be given annually. $$$$'s
https://www.jefferspet.com/products/fluvac-innovator-triple-e-ft?via...

All the other shots are fake shots that do nothing ... read the statements on research data slips ...." may aid the horse to have a milder attack of the disease etc" and may come down with the disease from the live cells used in the vaccine .... no immunity whatsoever .... the information is available so research the validity of the vaccine's affect on the disease ..

I like to mess with my vets and ask them why rabies is 3 years for dogs and cats and 1 year for horses .... it's recommended is the answer ..... no immunity tests are made on vaccines due to the loss of money to the drug companies ...

So.. ask yourself ... How come my doctor does not recommend I take annual booster shots for all the crap us humans spread to each other ?? ... lol .. but you do it to your horse ..

On refrigerated drugs .. I order them in the winter time with an extra ice bag and the insolated pkg ... and use the less expensive 2-3 day shipping ... never had a warm bottle delivered ... ice pks are still half frozen

Knowing how sloppy people are ... I always wonder if drugs have been left out somewhere and heated up .... Many times I have been at the grocery and wanted to buy a certain item but none in the freezer but a whole box with others are sitting on a palate in the aisle thawing out ... .. it is still there an hour and a half later when I check out ... lol

Any type of vaccine is said to take two weeks to a month to come into full force ... and for horse to normalize due to internal shock and toxic reactions.

As owners we must plan to give any vaccinations on slow months our horses are not going to be competing in case they show toxic reactions or come down with the disease we tried to prevent .... just look at your kids when they are being given vaccines in order to go to school ... this should make you more aware of what happens to a horse ...

Race track vets are the worlds worst ... there are racing rules that horses are to have certain vaccinations ... if a lazy owner or trainer does not have all the required shots ... the track vet will give them to satisfy the racing commission rules and the old horse will run in a race that night................... then the goofy owner or trainer wonders why the horse is sick for the next month or two ...
lol

I had a gelding years ago who would stock up on all 4 legs every time he got a rabies vaccine. His legs were like tree trunks. After we figured out it was vaccine related, he got banamine every time he was vaccinated and this helped quite a bit. In the mean time, I would cold Hose and furacin sweat.

Thank you all so much!
BARREL HORSE..I may get blasted for this but to be brutally honest, I HATE vaccines. I have my reasons. My friend (owner of said horse above) is made to give vaccines because she boards and they require them. I just gave my horse the rhino vaccine because my vet actually reccomended it this time because of his COPD and travelling as much as we do.
I am not thrilled and am wondering if I did the right thing. I trust my vet and he knows how I feel so I think he showed me the right direction.

Anyway, I checked on him last night and he is about 80-85% down in the swelling. The barn manager is excellent. She wrapped him over night, turned out part of the morning, and then re-wrapped until about 4 when she let him out in the big arena to roam and roll. He still seems a little stiff but he is not acting too bad. He is going to get bute until at least Friday and then we will go from there.

I have a horse that does this if he is vaccinated, it is common for some horses to do this. Cold hose, wrap, back on track are all options to help :) - I would probably give banamine over bute but thats personal preference.

Good luck!
