When I really send my horse to the first barrel the last couple runs he has run by. Doesn't do it at home. Thoughts?

Do you have any videos?

Could be a pain issue, could be your nerves or something you are doing and not realizing it.

If you've been sending him in the past and making good runs, and suddenly he's going past, then something is hurting or you've switched your approach angles and he can't make the turn.

I would like to get him checked out to make sure he is not hurting anywhere. He's a 7 year old that has never had to have special maintenance. He is also up to date on dental work.  What are some things I should ask the vet to check? Stifles and hocks?

Β Doesn't do it at home. Tells you a lot. If he's started to run more. You probably work him slower at home and ask him for his life at town. Both of your timing will be off. And what I found as one thing that changes. Speed disturbs everything. You may as I , have seen with speed and in town. You're pulling more. May not be much but that along with added speed disrupts timing. Can't push and pull at the same time. When we put our money up we all ride harder. Something to look at.

I totally get what you are saying and thought that may be the issue as well. However, I have asked him for his life in town several times and had a great first barrel. I may try staying straighter going in and see if that helps.

Β Sounds like he's really started to run and is running through the turn. Lost rate. And make sure your not pulling. Put set back. May never had that. Give a horse a target. Put that in. Set get ready to turn. Gear down. I get to ride those often. They lost some handle many never had much they were patterned but not taught their job.

Staying straighter is the wrong thing to do ...

Set your eyes on a spot 30 ft from barrel one on the line running to the 2nd barrel (this is only 2-3 strides out from barrel 1) ...

..... Make a 1/4 turn at that 30 ft spot to be facing the 1st barrel and then you can make a normal 360* around he 1st barrel ..
(the first barrel has 1 1/4 turns ) ...

Watch Mary Burger outsmart all the other barrel racers ...
she does not come barreling into the arena ..
she comes in ... shuffles down the chutes to let horse get oriented
and then starts her run and makes the 1/4 turn so her horse is facing
the fence and his right side is parallel to the far side of the 1st
barrel and her horse makes a normal 360* turn ...
WATCH ALL 4 OF HER RUNS ...

Horse is not given a chance to go running past the barrel ..

VERY SMART GRANMA!!
