Hi everyone I help produce a barrel race that is in memory of a good friend of mine. We just do the one big race every year and all the proceeds go to a scholarship fund. We are looking to increase our entry numbers and we are surveying our participants, but that doesn't give us any information on people who don't come to the race. I've read several posts made in the past on this subject but I wondered if y'all might take a super short (5 question plus a comment box) survey to give us some specific data on how you pick races to go to? Here is the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HS5LB73

Thank you guys very much!

We do one each year for my Mom and it's getting bigger and bigger!  We now have people who call US and ask to sponsor.  This year, we'll be giving over $10K to local cancer warriers.  The buckles are all sponsored in honor or in memory of someone, by their families and we have a waiting list for buckle sponsors!  We have $1000 added money to the open, $250 to youth and $200 each for WPRA and WPRA permit, so the payout is good, too.  There's also a silent auction and we give away all the exhibition money.  SO FUN to be a part of this.

This so AWESOME! That disease is so terrible, too many lost!

100% of our proceeds go to a memorial scholarship fund. We've given out $80,000 in scholarships in 4 years. This years applications will be out in January and are open to anyone to apply. If anyone is interested you might bookmark the website www.ll2fbarrelrace.com

Thank you! We got several already and I really think the feedback will help us create a better race! Wish I knew how to make it a live link...

Ours is no where near the size of yours. We do ours in conjunction with the Badlands Circuit finals, so we are pretty limited on time (we can only have the arena until 4:00pm so the committee can get ready for the rodeo). In my opinion, the location sucks. It's a small arena with hauled-in ground, which can be sketchy. Horses all have to stand on concrete at the trailers and parking is a ways from the building.

We have local beneficiaries that a lot of our barrel racers know. Sometimes they are also barrel racers, and sometimes well enough to be entered in the run! We read their submitted Cancer Journey stories. We spend a fair bit of time during the grand entry telling Mom's story and the reason for the event. People cry. A lot. It's very touching!

Our office staff is exceedingly friendly, and all volunteers. We run an efficient race, and any contestant can be running in honor or in memory of a cancer warrior and we read the names. During our award ceremony, we ready the stories of the buckle sponsors. It seems like people have a ton of fun, and we get a lot of complements.

The silent auction is full of donated items, and runs during the barrel race.

This year we had something like 200 runs (including 16 peewees), and we finished open arena, time blocks, 200 barrel runs and awards by 2:30pm. It was awesome!!

Here is a link to the Grand Entry video... it's 8 minutes long, but gives you an idea of the spirit of the day!

A friend of mine went last year and said that it was a great event and to put it on the "to-do list".
I was toying with the idea to go this year, but it is a bit too far for me.  Would have to take Friday off work, etc...  There were other high dollar added races closer in September.  If no other good races would have happend I would have traveled to Andrews.
It did turn out though, that I didn't go anywhere as both horses were not feeling well...

Go Misty Go- I'm sorry your horses weren't feeling well this year Keep us in mind! I know next year we will be on a different weekend than Ardmore so maybe that will help.

Rawhide Rose- I would love to share the responses! I think it could be helpful to everyone who produces a race. Maybe I can take photos and post them on here for everyone Going to close the survey later this afternoon as we are having a planning meeting tonight
