Recently bought a LQ trailer with just a shell and will have the LQ professionally installed spring of 2018.  In the meantime I would like to buy a generator to use now and then have it professionally hooked up.  I'm completely new at this so have no idea what size or what brand I should go with.  LQ has 10.5 ft SW and will have stove, sink, full bathroom, AC, and heat.  Thank you.

Depends on how much cash you want to spend. ONAN is the best and quiet if your going to have it hard wired inside the trailer itself.

Second the Onan. I've had about every brand out there and Onan stands above them all. Honda is second but a distant second.

they are not even the same class of gen sets. So a comparison makes no sense.

If you want a hard wired stand alone then Onan is not only the right choice, it is the only choice since Generac stopped making RV gensets.

But you if you want portable Yamaha has now over taken Honda as the Gold Standard in portable gens.

Which one would you recommend for a small living quarters that doesn't have slide out, has ac/heat/water heater and TV.
No fridge, stove or microwave.

Your power needs are simple ...

Concentrate on using propane to run your generator and hot water tank ..... just add a tank or get a bigger tank for propane use and minimize the use of gasoline for the generator ... this will increase your run time if needed ..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DuroMax-Powered-Portable-Generator-Dual-Fue...

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VFDJGCE?psc=1

Either of these units should work for you ... this allows you to use the generator 20 ft from your trailer safely and are light enough to load and unload ... I would not mount a non-moveable one in an LQ trailer due to lack of space and CO killing me ... lol

Keep the db noise level on the generator you buy below 72 db ....

These generators are functional and meets your needs without spending several thousands of dollars for those that have been recommended ...

Do buy a propane and carbon CO2 alarm system ... buying all three and mounting one in the nose, one on the stall/LQ wall and one down low might be the $100 that saves your life ... http://www.homedepot.com/p/Kidde-Plug-In-Combination-Explosive-Gas-...

We have two trailers both have Onan on top - one is great never an issue - the other has been nothing but trouble, Very few people work on Onan and some do not know what they are doing. We have spent thousands of dollars on that POS and now my daughter just uses a Honda she keeps in the back of her truck. You could not pay her enough to purchase another Onan

If you decide on a portable generator a Honda works great and is quite. I've had my Honda 3000 for over 10 years and just used it for 3 days straight during power outage from hurricane Matthew and it still works at good as ever.

Food for thought, I once got a piece of advice saying that if you don't have a generator hardwired in at the time of purchase, don't get one. When the generator needs servicing it's a lot more convenient to take in only a generator as opposed to taking in the whole trailer.

We have 12' LQ and run everything with a  Yamaha and love it.  Its pretty quiet and has a key to start it ( which I LOVE - our old one was a big tank and I had to pull start it or find someone to help me).  We have had it about 4 years. This is light enough my husban and I can pick it up and load it in the back of the truck ourselves.  Due to issues with our last trailer the only thing we don't do (it's a habit) is run the AC on high and the microwave at the same time, but it will run everything!!!   Yes my husband has a thing with turning on all the lights, TV, AC and the frige!!   We were talking to a guy at a rodeo who has one hardwired and said he would never do it again.  It was great to start with the pushbutton (when it worked) but when it didn't he had a heck of a time finding anyone to work on it.  So he baught one to put in the back of his truck.

A friend told me TSC carries a fairly quiet generator for a good price. Sorry, don't know the details, but worth a trip to check it out.

I've been looking at Champion generators. One model has a remote start! So you can turn it on/off without getting out of the trailer! Pretty reasonable price too.

I believe you can get the remote start for the Honda eu3000 also.  That would be pretty slick!

You really can't go wrong with a honda. I will say that I don't like the newer one as much as the old one I had. It lasted well over 10 years before it went kaput! We ran it for an entire week at Jackson, ms one year. That thing never blinked an eye...until one day it just died. Sad day! It had a lot of use and certainly was worth every penny. Immediately went and bought another.

We have a big older heavy one, the brand escapes me but it's off brand, 6500whateverunitstheymeasuregeneratoesizein. I can wrestle it in and out of my rear tack room, but I'm also 5'10 and pretty solidly built, I'm not sure a smaller person would have the leverage to wrestle it.

It's okay, it runs my AC fridge and the tv or the microwave, but not all 4 at once.

It has a 5 gallon tank and I get 16-18 hours off it, which I don't think is too bad.

When it dies we'll hopefully replace it with something a little lighter. My FIL has a smaller one but he can't run anything else when he's running the AC. I'm not sure I want to sacrifice power since I am strong enough to load and unload it.

I would not go self contained for the reasons already mentioned about maintenance as well a generator being handy to have in the event of a power outage at the house or needing power in a place with no power. We used ours extensively for different things before we ran electric to the barn.

My real PSA - when you pull into a rodeo or jackpot in the dark at 2am, do both of us a favor and locate my generator before you park, and locate your generator responsibly. Woke up one morning this summer to find that someone had pulled in and unhooked with their trailer nose right next to our generator, which was about 10' behind our trailer. About crapped myself. I have alarms in the trailer, but I also worry about people pulling in after we go to bed and setting theirs too close to our trailer.

Don't listen to it

Β

Well Well ... when did you escape from your Mom's basement??

Why don't you offer a solution rather than name calling ...

**********************************************************

LQ owners don't realize that RV trailers or motorhomes use propane for hot water tanks, refrigerators and heat which are your biggest power users. With your interior lights and even TV's/radios/steros running off of DC power rather than AC power since RV's have a battery pack with deep cell batteries with known amp hours they can be used depending on drop in voltage.
*************************************************************
LQ builders use the less expensive AC powered home appliances assuming you are going to be plugged into shore power rather than boondocking... which is running off of solar powered batteries or limited use of a generator ... or the light off of your cell phone ... lol
*************************************************************
When using a generator as Blackhorse1 explained .. you need to know the amount of electricity anything in the LQ uses so you don't overload your system and have a blackout or harm your appliances running at low voltage or current.
************************************************************
A few facts ...
Max power means the starting peak a generator does for a few seconds when you first start them up.

Load Rating: is the power in watts they generate at full speed ... what you want is a generator that runs your night time power usage at 1/2 speed. and be selective what appliances you use at the same time...

Max Power to Load Rating difference can be anywhere from 10% to 25%.... i.e. a 4000 peak power can jump down to 3000 watts running at max and at half speed to 2000 watts

As an Example of power usage .. most AC units run in the 16amp range which is almost 2000 watts of power needed and not harm the AC. Coleman Power Plus is a newer version that runs at 10 amps = 1200 watts

An Atco propane 6gal water heater with spark starter (means no pilot light on all the time) is turned off when not in use and using a remote button will heat up in less than 30 minutes while you drink your first cup of coffee ... .

Noise level in db's is measured with your generator 23 ft from your unit or your neighbors unit ... at national parks a ranger will shut you down if you are too noisy ... and will check to see if your muffler has a spark arrestor on it ... if you go to California you have CARB laws to adhere to .. so buy a generator that distinctly has a CARB sticker on it ..

Honda as a company is the worst to cheat on noise level and how long the unit will run on the gas in the tank ... by doing their data at variable loads and at 1/4 speed ... if you take their 3000 unit .. drops to 2800 rated load and down to 700 watts at 1/4 power which won't run a flashlight .. lol

Spend the $100 so your friends will not read that your generator or neighbors exhaust has slipped into your LQ thru a crack in the floor. a vent or open window and you never woke up from going to sleep ... myself .. I don't want to wake up and find out I passed away while I was sleeping ... lol

Propane is new to being used in generators and once you use one .. you will never go back to a gas unit. Propane is great for a home unit also .. your bottle of propane will remain "fresh" for years and ready to use. Nor will you need to be concerned about gas fumes that can create an explosion from some unrelated spark ...

Yamaha does have a good learning explanation in their marketing ad ... but does not tell you that tapping into the small battery on your generator will shorten its life very quickly ... so read it and add to your knowledge ..

Onan is the best you can get. Check into the Propane ones. I have one in my Living Quarters. Love it.
