jd&ez - 2016-10-19 10:31 AM Β Second the Onan. I've had about every brand out there and Onan stands above them all. Honda is second but a distant second.Β
Β
they are not even the same class of gen sets. So a comparison makes no sense.
If you want a hard wired stand alone then Onan is not only the right choice, it is the only choice since Generac stopped making RV gensets.Β
But you if you want portable Yamaha has now over taken Honda as the Gold Standard in portable gens.
Β Which one would you recommend for a small living quarters that doesn't have slide out, has ac/heat/water heater and TV. No fridge, stove or microwave. A very loud old generic 5000 that is used for construction jobs works great but is annoying
Your power needs are simple ... Concentrate on using propane to run your generator and hot water tank ..... just add a tank or get a bigger tank for propane use and minimize the use of gasoline for the generator ... this will increase your run time if needed ..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/DuroMax-Powered-Portable-Generator-Dual-Fue... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VFDJGCE?psc=1 Either of these units should work for you ... this allows you to use the generator 20 ft from your trailer safely and are light enough to load and unload ... I would not mount a non-moveable one in an LQ trailer due to lack of space and CO killing me ... lol Keep the db noise level on the generator you buy below 72 db .... These generators are functional and meets your needs without spending several thousands of dollars for those that have been recommended ... Do buy a propane and carbon CO2 alarm system ... buying all three and mounting one in the nose, one on the stall/LQ wall and one down low might be the $100 that saves your life ...

every thing that this person said is stupid.
Don't listen to it
Β
Well Well ... when did you escape from your Mom's basement??
Why don't you offer a solution rather than name calling ...
**********************************************************
LQ owners don't realize that RV trailers or motorhomes use propane for hot water tanks, refrigerators and heat which are your biggest power users. With your interior lights and even TV's/radios/steros running off of DC power rather than AC power since RV's have a battery pack with deep cell batteries with known amp hours they can be used depending on drop in voltage.
*************************************************************
LQ builders use the less expensive AC powered home appliances assuming you are going to be plugged into shore power rather than boondocking... which is running off of solar powered batteries or limited use of a generator ... or the light off of your cell phone ... lol
*************************************************************
When using a generator as Blackhorse1 explained .. you need to know the amount of electricity anything in the LQ uses so you don't overload your system and have a blackout or harm your appliances running at low voltage or current.
************************************************************
A few facts ...
Max power means the starting peak a generator does for a few seconds when you first start them up.
Load Rating: is the power in watts they generate at full speed ... what you want is a generator that runs your night time power usage at 1/2 speed. and be selective what appliances you use at the same time...
Max Power to Load Rating difference can be anywhere from 10% to 25%.... i.e. a 4000 peak power can jump down to 3000 watts running at max and at half speed to 2000 watts
As an Example of power usage .. most AC units run in the 16amp range which is almost 2000 watts of power needed and not harm the AC. Coleman Power Plus is a newer version that runs at 10 amps = 1200 watts
An Atco propane 6gal water heater with spark starter
(means no pilot light on all the time
) is turned off when not in use and using a remote button will heat up in less than 30 minutes while you drink your first cup of coffee ... .
Noise level in db's is measured with your generator 23 ft from your unit or your neighbors unit ... at national parks a ranger will shut you down if you are too noisy ... and will check to see if your muffler has a spark arrestor on it ... if you go to California you have CARB laws to adhere to .. so buy a generator that distinctly has a CARB sticker on it ..
Honda as a company is the worst to cheat on noise level and how long the unit will run on the gas in the tank ... by doing their data at variable loads and at 1/4 speed ... if you take their 3000 unit .. drops to 2800 rated load and down to 700 watts at 1/4 power which won't run a flashlight .. lol
Spend the $100 so your friends will not read that your generator or neighbors exhaust has slipped into your LQ thru a crack in the floor. a vent or open window and you never woke up from going to sleep ... myself .. I don't want to wake up and find out I passed away while I was sleeping ... lol
Propane is new to being used in generators and once you use one .. you will never go back to a gas unit. Propane is great for a home unit also .. your bottle of propane will remain "fresh" for years and ready to use. Nor will you need to be concerned about gas fumes that can create an explosion from some unrelated spark ...
Yamaha does have a good learning explanation in their marketing ad ... but does not tell you that tapping into the small battery on your generator will shorten its life very quickly ... so read it and add to your knowledge ..
