My 5 year old was perfectly sound when i rode on Tuesday afternoon. 3 hours later he was 3 legged lame on front foot. Took. To my vet and he had strong pulse on that foot. Vet says abcess or deep bruise. Soak, wrap, and pack and if it's abcess it will break. If bruise it will work then to. Wrapped him and he is almost instantly 100 percent as soon as diaper and hoof pack go on. He was sound for 3 days. Left wrap off and he was fine. Few hours later crippled again. Put wrap on, sound. Lol my gut tells me bruise cause as soon as it's packed he is instantly better. Any ideas??? I almost want my Shoer to put a pad on it but wouldn't want that if an abcess is on its way. Thanks!!!

UPDATE: THis morning he was NOT sound even with wrap on, so maybe its all coming to a head and it will break!

Sometimes those bruises are deep and you need to have it rechecked bc if it is abcessing it could go up the foot to the bone instead of drawing out

X ray and check for big abcess or other issue. If nothing seen, pull shoes and put in either soft rides or easy boots. Wait.

My mare did something similar and she's been turned out for three months so I didn't sit there and fret over her. She's finally starting to look better.

Thanks all! On Tuesday my vet did mention bone bruise in the conversation. Nothing other than if that was the case it would take a lot longer to heal. I will put in a call to her today to see what she says. Thanks.

Can this happen in just 1 foot???? I have a vet appointment for next week. Vet said she wants me to continue to soak and pack and hopefully it will break. If not, next wednesday we will xray...

He was sore in his right front, thats why we were thinking abcess this went on for about 2 weeks in his right front, did all the packing and then noticed he was getting sore in his left, so then I took him in and had my vet do xrays and then thats when we found that he had some rotation going on more in his right then his left, so then we knew what to do from there.

Thanks, mine is RF to. Mine is not subtle, he is either 100% sound OR basically non weight bearing from hour to hour... We will get it all lined out I am sure... Thanks for all the advice everyone!

An abscess can cause coffin bone rotation in one foot.

A bruise can also cause coffin bone rotation depending on the horse.

I had one 2 yr old who I swore was abscessing, poulticed her for a week, no avail. I put her on isoxiprine to break down a bruise, within 2 days she was sound never did abscess. This was under consultation of my vet of course.

I would speak to you vet about isoxiprine and the dosage, as it won't hurt your horse to try it.

My gelding kept coming up on and off sore/lame. Had x-rays done, no one saw much but recommended a softer more shock absorbing pad. Was sound for about 2 months and then came up lame again. Sent x-rays to a more expert lameness vet, he felt we were dealing with navicular and some coffin bone issues. As they were prepping his feet for being shod they found what the vet at first thought was some thrush he started to pare out ...Turned out to be a huge abscess in the outside bar of the foot he was having the issue on up against the digital cushion. Drilled it out, put him on Isoxoprine, reshod and he trotted off sound. The abscess was so deep that the vet felt that each time I had gotten back on him and started to ride again it would irritate it, flare it up and he'd go lame, I'd get off of him and it would settle down again. I was only allowed to hand walk the first 3 weeks until we pulled the shoe to check how the sole was filling back in, then saddled walking for another 6 weeks. Was allowed to add trotting under saddle and then got the go ahead to get him fit for running at the 12 week mark. That was a little over a year ago, so far so good though we have kept him on the Isoxiprine because of his tendency's to get thrush/bruises and the small changes to his navicular and coffin bones.

Got home from work at 3pm and he could barely walk. Soaked and repacked his foot and 4 hours later he is sound as a dollar!! I'm having his shoe pulled tomorrow morning and I bet it works! I think the shoe is holding in the abcess. After i soak it , it relieves some pressure then it builds again. I'm headed to vet Monday.

Just got back from vet today! We took a bunch of xrays and nothing showed up on xray. No abcess or broken parts. So we are dealing with a deep bruise and vet said to put pad on that foot and the other foot so they are even! So we will see! Also we are starting him on isoxuprine for 30 days or so
