I know nothing about breeding horses but have seen this in a few ads. Just wondering if it's similar to how cattle semen is handled and what the pro's and cons of it is versus other methods.

We have done both here.

What I have found is, a lot of vets don't want to work with frozen semen.
The protocol is more intense and more touchy than regular cooled semen.
It requires more ultrasounding and more precise timing.   So more expense for the mare owner @ the repro facility.
Also using frozen semen tends to cause more post breeding inflammatory response in mares than regular cooled semen.  So more intense monitoring post breeding for uterine clearance issues, and most likely at least 1 post breeding infusion.  (this can happen with cooled semen also but is more likely with frozen).

The good part of it is being able to have the semen stored ahead of time and being able to use it when right when it is needed!  And not having to ship and have a chance of your mare ovulating before the semen arrives.  Most farms that ship cooled semen only ship 3 days a week (or every other day) so the timing on that can also be tricky to get it to your facility in time.

We prefer to go the cooled route when possible, here.  It is just the easiest way for us to go.
We did breed one mare with frozen semen this year and she settled the first time.  Although having to pry my eyes open to go thaw semen & breed her @ 2AM was NOT that much fun, because that is when she decided to ovulate.
