I am trying to find the best way to rehab my mare after she damaged the suspensory and broke the sesamoid bone on her L hind. She had 8 weeks of stall rest and we got the OK to move to a stall+small run and start walking 10 minutes a day. She is very difficult to walk and tries to take off, hits the end of the halter and rears. Seriously like half of our walk she is on her hind legs and that is exactly what I don’t want! Any advice? Turn her out? Keep walking her? I feel like I am trying to hand walk a kangaroo on crack. |

| If you can afford it, box her up and send her to a rehab facility.
If you can't, get a long acting sedative into her. I'm not scared to Ace one either.
Do what you have to so that leg heals. |

| She doesn't have any friends and ponying her with another horse didn't work either. I might have to look in to sedating her just until we can get these first few weeks of walking under her belt..

What are some of the long term ones? Are there any side effects or reactions? I've never used any LT ones.
The closest rehab facility is 100+ miles away and it is new, so I wouldn't be comfortable sending her that far without being able to check up regularly.

Location: WI | I had one on 6mos of stall rest. I had him on Reserpine for the stall rest, then when I was ok'd to hand walk, lunge, ride, etc Reserpine was no longer enough and I had to Ace him. He wasn't rearing up on me, but did try to bolt several times. Can't blame him. |

| There is a "Prozac" shot for horses that lasts a month. They have it at Red River Equine, Benton LA. You could have your vet call or you & tell them the situation, they can mail it. They mailed it to my friend. It's not expensive either. |

That sounds like Reserpine, it is an antipsychotic. It doesn't work the same on all horses. At first I got the shot and it lasted 1 week. Vet recommended going to the powder feed through. I gave him a scoop every other day. |

| Definitely don't turn her out because she will end up hurting herself if she goes and runs crazy! I would try ACE or another sedative...talk to your vet and they should have some options for you! |

Location: Opelousas, LA | Ace and a lip chain, be sure to give the ace time to work, if you give it when they are already amped up it doesn't work as well. I have had good luck with Thia-Cal from Finish Line also, but I bet you will still need ace. |
