| We only have hard clay we f you don't put sand you have footing like concrete,I put three dump trucks in it and its deep, in the past I've put three and it was perfect just wondering how deep everyone else keeps theres. |

Location: Washington | We out a layer of rock/gravel down under so it drains good then there is about 6 inches of sand on top. Deep enough for good traction but not too deep they get bogged down when it gets heavy with rain. Our round pen is huge, about 100'. But it's AWESOME! Ride all year round. We do float it to help it stay drained.

| I have a good base my sand feels deep I measured its 4 To 6 inches really feels like they are struggling,your pen looks nice my ground isn't as solid as your what kind of sand is that? |

It's just normal sand from the rock pit? We are in the NW, wonder is that make a differance? I could have guessed wrong, maybe 4-5 inches? I can measure later!
We have clay here as well and when it gets wet it gets slipperier then snot, then slippery deep mud the more rain you add to it.
Our is deep enough they can dig for cutting moves or barrel turns but they dont get bogged down. A friend of ours has a huge arena, that the previous owners didn't put a base down, just lots of sand and I'm sure her horses are in the best shape around!
I though about adding a summer picture, when the rain hasn't made it heavy, so here is one now......(All my photos are zoomed into the horse/ride and dont' show much of the roundpen itself)
Here it is wet and you can see how the horse can still get into he ground
