I recentry bought a new saddle for my mare because my other one was too narrow. I can put it up on her with no pad and it fits like a glove. Put a pad under it and still looks good. But when I ride her in it, it'll slide back every time. I've tried a 7/8" 5 Star and a CSI, shimmed it different ways, and have rigged my saddle in 3 different ways and it still slides back. There's never been any ruffled hair. And it slides back more with the 5 Star than the CSI. Never rolled or anything though. What should I do?

Go to a thiner pad and see what happens, like a 3/4 or a 1/2 inch. Sounds like your saddle fits pretty good, so your pads made be to thick..What brand is your saddle? And why are you shimming your saddle if its a good fit?

It's a wide fit Pozzi. And I was experimenting with shimming it because someone told me maybe it needed to be shimmer if it was sliding. But I think shimming made it slide more.

Was it sliding back befor you tryed the shims? And I would go with a 3/4 pad but dont shim, I have a wide Pozzi too and it fits my two big boys just right, I use a 3/4 on one horse and a 1/2 inch on my other gelding..All my pads are 5 Stars. The wide tree could be to wide too.

It was sliding a little without shims, but probably twice as much with the shims. I had a standard tree pozzi and it sat up on her like a tent and pinched her and you could tell it was uncomfortable for her because she doesn't hide her attitude. Her attitude has gone away almost completely since I got the wide

Yep, try your saddle with a thiner pad and see what happens and no shims.. Its good that that you know that the standaed tree was not working for your horse and she has a better attitude with this new one, let us know how your saddle does after you try a thinner pad.. Alrighty

I would try a different pad. I bought a 5 Star and quit using it because it made my saddle slip back. The saddle was fine with other pads.

Sounds like the saddle may be getting pushed back by the shoulders. I had one horse that was like this before crown c, I bought the biggest gullet west flare at the time, and his shoulders still moved the saddle back 3" after running.
