I was taught a very simple way to do this. Whenever you need to work a horse on the pattern, make them LEAVE a barrel one gate up from what they went in. SO walk in, trot out. Trot in, Lope out, lope in run out. You can also come up with a cue/noise/smooch etc and teach them that means " Run". I " Kiss" to all of mine on the back and when they hear that it means hit another gear!

I always seem to have good luck with good correct rollback drills/drilling. Gotta do it in a way to make sure the horse keeps the forward momentum but still turning correctly.
