Does anyone else have to deal with a horse or horses who do not recognize a herd mate when blanketed? It's like introducing a completely strange horse into the mix! I have one mare who is insecure in her place in the herd and challenges and fights with any new horse in the pen. Unfortunately she does not recognize an established member of the herd and the charging, squealing, kicking and chasing begins.

I had to remove blankets from the two that were wearing them to wash and put them in different colored blankets. I then had to spend 15-20 minutes trying to separate the "victim"(she was the other blanket) back out of the chase and remove his blanket, well I had to pen him overnight due to the cold. Too many kicks landed on legs in the interim. She was the instigator by not accepting him and the other two joined in even after smelling their former buddy.

Sigh...I can put a tan blanket on my loudly colored App but I learned that I cannot put a maroon one on him (she was used to a former herd mate in a tan blanket). Just when you think the herd is stable.......

I dont know why but I find this funny.  Horses are absolutely absurd animals.

My one horse flipped out when he saw his buddy in a PHT hood and blanket.  I can see that more than just a regular old stable blanket though!

Yep... first time I blanketed my horses and turned them out, they took off running, like they always do... the horses across the road absolutely lost their marbles and hauled booty, tails up in the air, snorting, to the other end of their pasture and wouldn't come back down for weeks.

This cracks me up!!  I put a blanket on my gelding this year...he is 9yo and first time in his life he has worn one.  OMG you thought he was going to die.  Wouldn't move at all cause it made noise...when he did move he didn't know what to do.  Now he is a pretty reactive horse anyways so figured this is great for his desensitizing.  LOL!!

Yup! For some reason, one of my older horses does not like my red roan 3 yo so they cannot be turned out together. One day, I put the older horse out with his normal buddy, but had put fly sheets on them which we later figured out had made a bay horse look kind of like a red roan. We finally had to catch both of them and pull the fly sheet off the bay because the other was getting violent. Once we took the fly sheet off everything was perfectly normal! I think he's psycho!!!

Not with a blanket as I don't blanket my pony. But last year I had my gelding in a pasture with four mares and a younger filly. Well.. Put Cas out there for the first time with a fly mask, they lost their marbles.

I actually got a video, but for some reason it didn't save it. They literally surrounded him, one was pawing at the ground, the other was pinning her ears and tossing her head, the other was trying to charge him, then you had the alpha mare literally "guarding" the filly, like the filly would try to trot around to see and the alpha mare was literally between her and Cas, just trotting with her, keeping her away from the evil hooded animal that just walked into their pasture. It was in the least, comical. I wasn't too worried about my boy getting injured, because he was next to the Alpha in the pecking order and he can be a bit of a bully and can handle his own. They did this for about 15 minutes before they realized.. Hey, that's our pasture buddy! lol

I put blankets on earlier this year when we had rain when it was 30 degrees and had a mare start chasing the others like they were new to the herd.

I WISH they were scared of each other when blanketed but noooooo my morons like to destroy each other's blankets with their teeth. Last time I blanketed, my youngest gelding had his modified into a cape by his brother and flying around like superman with it flapping in the wind while the others followed. Now, when my dog has his blanket on OMG they lose their minds!
