WELL, depends on age and use for me. Over summer I bought a mare for 15K who was a cutter at 3 now age 11, then a finished rope and barrel horse rest of her life. I was not there either but I was on the phone ( Facetime) live while exam was done. Normal health check, heart, lungs etc. THen flexed all joints. Absolutely ZERO soundness issues except she was a "1" on left hock. we then xrayed hocks, stifles, and front feet. All clean there. I had vet pull blood just to test for NSAIDS and steroids in case she was given something prior to vet check. I purchased on the condition of blood work. It came back clean. I decided on the phone with vet to have hocks injected. It was his recommendation based on age of the horse and intended use. He was not out to get my money one bit. So far so good!
Vet check, including all of the above ( And hock injections) was $1100 dollars. Probably best money spent. ALso got to see if anything in the future was headed my way via xrays.

| Like Flitastic did...layers. Basic first, if that looks good, go to the next level. And at some point you may have to decide do I want this horse enough to spend $1K + on a vet check?
Another consideration is if you can't be there have your regular vet available if there needs to be a discussion with guy doing the PPE. I I've done that when I was looking at a horse out of state. I'd tried him, but wasn't buying without the PPE.
I have to say at this stage of my life I hate horse shopping......Good Luck!

Location: Texas | A "rule of thumb" I was given by senior clinicians is to spend 10% of the purchase price on a PPE. Granted, that means on some major expensive horses, there's some major expensive PPEs... But I think the more you spend on the horse, the more information you should before buying.
for a 5-10k horse I would probably get baseline radiographs of hocks and coffin joints. I would also do a basic oral exam to look at the teeth. I also wouldn't rule out ultrasound but that's not something I would do on every horse. And of course every PPE should include a thorough physical exam listening to the heart and lungs, a rebreathing exam, general lameness exam (hoof testers, flexion tests, NO nerve blocks), and a baseline neuro exam evaluating the cranial nerves and looking for signs of ataxia or muscle asymmetry.
For super expensive horses, you can consider doing more in depth tests like upper airway exam and endoscopy, dynamic scope, echo, radiographing hocks, fetlocks x 4, coffins (front) stifles, back, neck, etc.. running blood for CBC, chem, drug panel, gastroscopy, etc.. | |

| I would get x-rays. Im not in the position to buy another 5-10k for a few years, so the initial $500-$1000 vet exam is worth it. Also if you are getting x-rays done, have the vet thats doing it send it over to your vet. Get his/her advice. I couldnt see your vet charging ya much for insight on an x-ray. | |
