You can lead them to water but you can't make them drink. . . .

You can build them a barn but. . . . . .

You're giving them a choice and when it's bad enough I bet they'll head towards comfort!

They are horses. They were not disigned from mother nature to be in a barn standing in a stall. This is what they are telling you.

Is the storm really as bad as they say, I've been watching it on the news. I grew up in so cal. My horses prefer to stand out in the rain too! Drives me nuts! I end up locking them in because they start shivering if it gets cold.

Lol, mine are weanies, the slightest sprinkle and they run for cover.  Storming  and lightning once, went to get my gelding parked under a tree about 100 yards from the barn did not take a halter knowing he was hating it and would want to be up. The sucker  walked backwards the whole way to keep the rain out of his face, took forever

...walking backwards, that's funny!
I'm starting new facilities they will be nothing like "my" barn.  It will be aimed for their comfort not mine. Probably be lots cheaper too!

Sometimes they just do dumb things.

All my paddocks are 2-2.5 acres with shelters, each paddock usually has 2 head except for yearlings.

I have one brood mare that is convinced that the shelter is haunted and will not go in it for nothing.

She stands in the rain, she stands in the sun, she stands in hail.

Ok. It's the morning after now. lol I am in riverside county inland so cal. We only got about 1.5" here. Not bad. But Los Angeles area got well over 6" and freeways were beyond flooded etc. so it was bad but not for us over here. I went and checked on them late last night and they were standing next to their shelter. Lol not in it but close. lol my new colt from Washington was not amused. He is used to much worse.

I have runs with cover for wind block and rain for each horse, and they use them, my horses are made of sugar they think and they will melt if they get rained on, lol.. But when the cold fronts come in they come in hard and the horses like that wind block for that reason.. Now if they are out in their pastures when the rain hits then they just turn their butts into it.
I think your horses are just confused Flit since you guys dont hardly get rain in your part of the world so they really dont know what the barns are for.

I have learned that sheds and barns with metal roofs make too much noise for most horses to feel comfortable when it rains.
Ear plugs may work!

LOL not only does he not use the barn really BUT he finds the wettest, nastiest spots in his run to lay down in.lol He has dry spots out in his run, but NOOOOOOOOOOO he wants to pick out the worst possible spot to lay flat out... Oh well a horse will be a horse...

Ugh, right?!?! My three have options. The older colt was completely dry in his dry stall. The younger colt somehow managed to have a flooded stall and was fairly wet. Idk what happened but his stall looks like the storm of the century hit it. Then there's the mare... the barn has two roll up doors. The south one, at her end, was closed and the wind was blowing rain from the south on to the metal walls and door, plus the roof. She doesn't like any of that and was soaking wet and shivering when I fed yesterday. I put the oldest, supposed to be the smartest, in the most wind protected spot since I left the north door up. She was staring at me from her pen when I opened the front door and she was not happy. I felt bad but then I sort of didn't, seeing as how she chose to be outside. She's fine in the horrible desert winds, but raindrops hit the metal and she gone. ????

She loves rain. My gelding will peek his head out and if he feels a sprinkle will go right back into his stall. Don't even get me started on mud with that boy... He's a princess and will tip toe through it to get to his stall.
I think the mare makes fun of him....

My 3 are weird I think. They have a very nice barn to get in out of the weather which they run to when it rains, even a few drops. But let them see mud and they roll in it till it is dripping of their bodies. But let me try and give them a bath and I get drenched trying.

Mine do that too. My dad's two rope horses usually nap out in the rain, my OTT mare never leaves her stall unless the weather is up to her standards. She's always very clean lol.
