I keep my change in my pockets Posts: 2985 Location: MN	I hope I can explain this correctly. Can a vet ultrasound a horse's belly to see if the scar tissue from an injury that would cause the intestine to scar to the belly wall ? My hubby's mare as a yearling tried to jump a gate a sliced her belly open in one spot and had a about 1 foot of intestine hanging out. She is know 11 yrs old and we are thinking about breeding her. But we warned by the vet who stitched her that there might scaring that would cause the intestine to adhere to wall.

Warmblood with Wings Posts: 27846 Location: Florida..	my mare had issues .. but hers was a surgeon error and intestines slipped thru wall and had alot of adhesions ..and yes they can stick and cause intestines to stick together or stick anywhere and removing can cause more..not sure how bad your mares is but thats just my experience..and with humans its the same .. not sure if it will interfer with breeding though..

You get what you give Posts: 13030 Location: Texas	So in theory, yes, but realistically, possibly yes or no. When you ultrasound the horse's abdomen, you can only penetrate a certain depth with the ultrasound so you can't get all the way through into the deepest structures. There's definitely a chance that you can see adhesions especially if they are close to the old incision or if they aren't too far from the abdominal wall. But you would be lucky if you saw adhesions within the abdominal viscera. The best way to look for adhesions without being super invasive would be laparoscopy and actually putting a camera through the portals and looking. You can also rectally palpate and see if you can feel any abnormalities, but, that probably won't tell you much either. If theres intestine adhered to the wall, its possible that the ultrasound could see it. It's definitely worth a try, or worth making an appointment with a referral facility with clinicians who are boarded in internal medicine or have done a fellowship in ultrasonography. Some of these people are very talented with ultrasound technology and can identify very minute details. It's as much as an art as it is a science. Edited by casualdust07 2017-03-07 9:23 AM
