I've watched Cody grow up from a kid to the man he was now. He was an awesome friend to those that knew him, a natural hand on a horse and with cattle and someone you'd hope that your daughters would grow up to find and marry. I think all of us who knew them are just still in shock. All I can say is when the fire started, the wind had been blowing pretty steadily around 20 mph from the southwest. It had done that all day. Right around the time that I think they were killed, it started blowing hard -- I mean like 40-50 mph straight out of the west. I had gone outside from working at my office in the house to hook up my truck and horse trailer since we were in the path of it. When the wind shifted, I almost couldn't open the door on my pickup to get out and I had to walk back to the house leaning into the wind like those reporters do in the hurricane coverage shots. It only blasted like that for maybe 3-5 minutes but I believe it's a good chance that the same wind happened where they were at and it's why they got caught so quickly. Cody had experience with these wildfires from close calls in the previous years and I don't see any of them going out towards the fire unless they thought that they could get the gates open in time and get out. There was no warning that the winds would shift like that -- it had literally been blowing south-southwest all day and had stayed steady at 15-25 mph winds. If you weren't outside at the time the west wind shifted like that, you wouldn't have known but it was a hard shift and a big gust of sustained wind. We were actually probably lucky that many of the volunteer firefighters (because that's all we really have out here) were on the way driving to the fire at that time instead of right in it because I'm afraid that we would have had more casualties or people severly hurt. Since you live close by - how did all the fires start?

Elite Veteran Posts: 959 Location: Borger, Tx	At this time I don't think they have determined a cause of the fires here. With the way the wind has been blowing and gusting it easily could have been downed lines. A few weeks ago we had a bad ice storm where several poles and lines snapped, everything was repaired but those that didn't break could have ben weakened and then add in the relentless wind. The stories and pictures have been beyond heartbreaking. A few of the Panhandle girls are starting a Auction page that will run for 2 weeks, 100% of the proceeds will go to the ranchers and victims families.
