We did the inner channel back in 2000 on the Norwegein line. LOVED it so much. I was 18 at the times. The Northern lights are amazing.

I went last August on Princess. Loved every second of it although I hope I never see another buffet. Ate way too much. Definitely take the train trip at Skagway and loved the salmon bake at Juneau.

My sister has done a cruise and a land trip.   She said the cruise was great but she preferred the land trip much better, was able to see and do more.   My husband and I are going for 12 days this July, flying in to Anchorage, renting a car and heading south for a few days, spending 3 days at a remote lodge then heading north to Denali with overnights in towns along the way,  flying home out of Fairbanks.

That sounds like a lot of fun! How did you plan your trip? We have debated doing something like this as well, but we have never been so thought a cruise would be better?

How many days did you go? Also, how long are you at each location? We have never been on a cruise ship! Usually just fly to Mexico!

We did a 7 day cruise back in 2007 (I earned 80% of the trip paid for through work). I think we used Royal Caribbean. We went in July. Flew to Vancouver and boarded, cruised up the coastline--never out on open water, you could almost always see the coastline, so we never felt seasick like I dealt with on a 2 day cruise to the Bahamas. We had stops in Skagway, Juneau, Sitka, and I can't think of the 4th stop. Saw Hubbard Glacier, which was fantastic. Did the gold-mining town tour, a salmon bake (so good), the train ride (very cool), the tram and hiking in Juneau, and we were supposed to do a helicopter ride to on of the glaciers, but it was too foggy. The cruise ship was fun too, and oh my god the food was fantastic!
We ended up with a night in Vancouver due to flight times not being late enough, and we liked it as well. Did a sea plane flight around the bay, and walked around the sea-walk and looked at Ferrari's and limos and yachts.

ETA: we want to go back some day, but we want to go inland next time. I'm sure it's a whole new adventure from the coastline.

We went on a Princess Cruise in 2004, we flew up to Fairbanks and were on land for 4 days then cruised down to Vancouver over 7 days.  I thought it was a great combo of land and cruise.  The flight up was even beautiful and scenic!  We hiked at Skagway, kayaked at Ketchikan and wished we had flown up on the mountain at Talkeetna.  We were the last cruise of the year.  We left Denver Labor Day weekend and had great weather, some shorts and hot tub/pools, some heavy coats.  A ton of great scenery.

My grandparents were HUGE cruisers. They took the Alaskan cruise and LOVED IT. They said the only downside was no other cruise ever stacked up to it. It was so beautiful that nothing compared after it. I'm not sure what cruise line they took?! I'm sure my mom would know, I could ask her later.

We spent 3 weeks up in AK several years ago. Did the smaller cruise ship SilverSea. We spent two weeks in a 30' RV pretty much went all over from Fairbanks about an hour and a half N all the way to Valdez.
We loved the camping and hired a bush pilot a couple of times to do half day flights into remote areas. My husband has worked way up above the artic circle and I missed out on going that far N. So one day I want to go back and see the remote area's N of Fairbanks. We learned that we could go in the early off season much cheaper and the RV's are cheaper if we book a half year out.
We loved the inside passage on our smaller cruise ship. Although it wasn't like bare boating it was nice.
Enjoy, I think anyone would love AK!

We did an Alaskan cruise on Celebrity and it was great. However we have now been sailing on CRYSTAL and absolutely love the cruise line. Service and food is spectacular. Enjoy Alaska!
