I decided today to limit my two horses to 3-4 hours on the pasture and the rest of the time will be spent in their stalls, which are 12×24 with a large slow feed hay net full of coastal. They are usually out 24/7 but they are getting huge... I even quit feeding grain for several weeks and alfalfa since we fertilized and the pasture just took off. They haven't even looked at the round bale in months. My usually well mannered lazy side gelding was a goofy loon today when I rode him... prancing, spooking etc... I'm thinking pasture must be too rich. Of course they are not too thrilled to be stalled right now... I typically only stall them when we get rain to keep them off the pasture. I don't want to cause any health issues because I know it's ideal for horses to be out grazing.

Can you build yourself a "dry lot'', either with panels or electric tape? Then you can let them eat that down to dirt and turn them on pasture for the limited grazing. This is what I do. I find that if I leave them on pasture for at least two hours without access to water, they will come in pretty willingly to drink. Otherwise getting them to come in is just short of an Act of God.

Yes, that's perfectly reasonable. I've also always been told that the sugar content of grass is the highest early in the morning. So you may keep that in mind when choosing what hours you leave them turned out.

I'd most likely boot them out around 8am ish then bring them back in around 12-1 for the day...
