Anyone ever have success breeding a mare post ovulation???

Gave my mare lutalyse last wednesday to bring my mare into heat.  Showed signs of being in heat this past weekend.  Dropped her at vet Sunday.  Vet checked her...she had a very nice folicle.  Was at a 36 I believe.  Called breeder....stud was collected and shipped out yesterday.  Vet received shipment this morning, and went to AI my mare, and she had already ovulated!!!!  My vet is stumped....She still went ahead and AI'd her because even though she's not sure when she ovulated, she said it hadn't been long, so we're hoping and praying she'll catch.  Vet said we have a 4-6 hour window post ovulation...

My vet is stumped as to why she ovulated so quickly.  This is going to be a long 2 weeks until until we can check to see if she caught.  If not, we only have 1 more chance this year to get her in foal, as the stud stops shipping June 1st.

So please send all your fertility/pregnant prayers my way!!

I had a mare do this to me TWICE last year and she ovulated once on a different follicle that wasn't even the biggest one.  Just nature!  LOL, I always say in the breeding business, it either works or it doesn't!  :)

they can ovulate on a follicle that size without you having to give any drugs. Did she give her anything like deslorelin or HCG? It also depends on if she had a follicle in the presence of a CL.. some mares will have a decent follicle on the opposite ovary and will progress really fast once you short cycle compared to a mare that has a CL and not much going on.

Horses can just be tricky... some build big follicles and ovulate greater than 40.. some build 30s or 35s and will ovulate there. She may just be one where she doesn't build a big follicle. Next time she may build a big one.. LOL.

The odds of catching her with cooled semen post ovulation are low, but nothing is impossible. When you breed with frozen semen you want to catch them as soon to ovulation as possible, so its not uncommon to breed post OV on frozen. But when you breed on frozen you check every 6 hours to make sure you are within the safe window.

The only way to guarantee not being pregnant was to not AI her, so you at least gave her the best shot you could. Repro is tricky :/.

She gave her something Sunday night so she would ovulate afer 48 hours, but she did not tell me what she gave her, so I don't know.

When I bred her 2 years ago, she ovulated late...after 40...she hung on for along time just at the edge and didn't ovulate.

This was cooled shipped...so i guess we'll just have to wait and see.  And prepare myself that we have to do this again just in case....and hope everything goes well next time...

Horses don't always read the book. :/

Your vet did everything right.. that size is the perfect size to give the drug to make them ovulate and its usually timed perfectly on schedule.

Oh no!  Im not blaming anyone for doing anything wrong at all.  Its just something that happens, I get it.  I trust my vet 150%.  Even she was stumped...lol...

I know there is a slim chance she'll catch this time.   Just hoping and praying she does....even with a small chance!

Ovulation has a 6 hour window and post ovulation means
you are too late ..

Smart vets will inseminate and then give them a shot to come
into full bloom ...

it is better to inseminate 24 hours before the
ovulation since average sperm will last 48-60 hours in the mare
than giving a shot and mare ovulates before semen arrives ...

Always remember that 50% of vets, lawyers and doctors graduated
in the lower half of their class ... lol

I am in the same EXACT boat except my problem was FEDEX. They didn't deliver the semen on Tuesday when they were supposed to, so Tuesday night we were driving to track it down. The driver was heading back to headquarters. The driver was literally in my town but too lazy to finish his run and drop it off or call. After an hour and a half on the phone with unhelpful people, we were able to find it. Anyway, we got it but weren't able to AI until after 9 that night. She had already ovulated. Now our fingers are crossed. We were breeding on foal heat. So I feel your pain. Good luck to you!

Actually, dispite what some have said here if you research it, it will show you that it's actually a 12 - 16 hour window post ovulation. We ended up last year putting the semen in post ovulation and she foaled last week. We have no definate answere how far post ovulation she was because she ovulated sometime after 6 p.m. the night before and she was bred after she ovulated about 10 a.m.

I'm frustrated, too...

We have a maiden mare that I just preg checked today- after two inseminations, she is back in heat now with a 49mm follicle. The semen was fresh- stallion is two hours away, so I picked it up and the vet AI'd that same day and then the following morning (AI because the stallion is older, no more live cover available). Great semen quality- she was inseminated last time with a 42mm follicle. Vet is stumped as to why she's not yet in foal.

The breeding business is oh, so much fun at times. Other times, it's not...

Our mare checked in foal today after being bred post ovulation. Not sure how many hours out we were. Mare was checked at 5:00 pm & hadn't ovulated yet, but had when the vet checked her the next day after semen arrived. She was inseminated anyway and 2 weeks later confirmed a pregnancy. So while not ideal, it can still happen. Good luck!
