| I recently bought a super hot little mare, like i mean her mind is set on go go go. When purchasing her she just came back from 30 days to soften her up and they did a great job because she is very soft in the face now. The trainer had her in a sweet 6 and a twisted wire draw gag. I have tried the Dutton draw gag but I feel like I have too heavy of hands for that with her but responds really well in it. She is a free runner and has ran past a barrel before so I need something to control her but be able to stay out of her way at the same time. Tried a sweet 6 she fought it the whole time, shes not much on bits so i put a little S hack on her, not enough woah.. My seasoned horse runs in a Jim Warner like a dream so that will be my next choice, also have a hidez mask on order to see if that helps any.
I'm at a point now where i don't know to keep her in a bit or keep trying hacks, any help is much appreciated!! |

Location: Texas | I really think you're wasting your money on the Hidez mask fad. Instead of changing what is or isn't in her mouth, focus on calming her down and really getting her listening to you at all times. Take some time away from barrels and just work with her and get her focused. How old is she? |

Location: NeverLand | The problem now days with people (not just you) I see it all the time, is that if its not fixed over night then they jump to 10 different bits and try all of the newest "Fad" gadgets. You are just setting her up to fail. Take her off the barrels for a few weeks go play with some cows if you have that option go trail ride, give her mind something to do other then barrels. she needs to go back the basics. something is missing in the training somewhere. Sounds like to me she needs a job other then barrels.

| She is 11 and still has the heart of a 3 year old. I'm never one to hop on a bangwagon with a new fad but I am looking into all options. When she is worked for a good 30 minutes tired and sweaty she works around the pattern like a dream, but she does still have her moments where she just wants to flat go out of a turn. She is a great horse don't get me wrong just more on the hot side then I am used to riding. |

| I will put this out there the mare is not finished on the pattern by any means we are still working on putting a good foundation in, my main question came because it is hard to slow her down and really work on the basics around the pattern. The previous owners were using her to heel off of until they ruined her on that and will now no longer back in a box. She has the heart to run and more try than I have ever seen out of a horse so we went with barrels. I'm not giving up on her just because she is hot just want a happy medium with us so I can stay out of her face and let her work and the same time but at my speed i'm asking. |

| I would get her on a magnesium supplement, and then I would take her off the barrels and do drill work only. Give her things to do that make her think and use her brain. You need to get her focused on YOU and not her environment.
These kind of horses are a lot of work. I have a mare like this and I haven't seen her in months because she is out at a trainer learning to cool her jets and think about what the rider is asking of her, and less go go go go. She isn't even seeing a barrel pattern. I think you are confusing this mares "heart" with anxiety. I did the exact same thing with my mare. I assumed she loved her job TOO much, but realized it was her anxiety that was ruining our communication.

Location: Loco,Ok | I ride these kind a lot. Most are man made. They are ultra lite. Because a horse is an animal of flight. When you scare,surprise,hurt them their tendency is to run. You pull they push. Get in a pushing pulling war you can't win. Most then add more headgear. These you go the other way. You support your feet with your hands. Less is more. Your body tells them to be stiff and run. I get them here regular to ride. When you take them out of the trap. You take the fear factor away. They process information different. I take it out of their mouth and put it on the nose. Give them a job. |
