| Just throwing this out there as we are exhausting options on this one. My sisters good horse was 7th in the nation last fall, she has been competitive on him for the past few years. He is as solid as they come, knows his job, we know his routine and his normal behavior. He wintered well, was given some time off before starting to leg up around late February . She entered a couple jackpots and he did not appear to clock, but we assumed that was normal, as he has been a rodeo horse for years and seems to "try" a little harder at those types of set ups. At this point, he appeared healthy. His health has rapidly decreased over the next month, and recently he is nearly a second and a half off the pace, he looks about as poor as he is running. This is extremely out of character for him, We are not even running him for the past couple weeks, she felt bad using him, thats how awful he is looking. We have had blood work done, 2 vet's examined him and can not come up with anything other than some normal slight mineral deficiencies. We have not changed feed, we have lept him in shape, we have vaccinated and wormed....everything I can think of. He doesnt seem sore, but he seems obviously some type of sick. We are giving him b12 through IV, adding red cell and ABC plus supplements. Anyone have this type of issue? we have been running competitive horses for nearly 20 years and know how to take care of them. several of our other horses are on the same program, same feed, and are 100% healthy, as he was until recently. Looking for anyone who has experienced something like this, as we are stumped on how to help one of our favorite big guys.

| First thought was to try ulcer guard...still giving him that although he has never had trouble with ulcers before... has not been tested for EPM, will ask my vet, thank you! he is 16, teeth are good and vet took a look at them a few weeks ago too. Thanks for the replies!! |

Location: Opelousas, LA | My first two guesses would be contaminated feed or EPM, symptoms could be similar. What you are doing doesn't seem to be working so maybe switch feed or just go to a very good quality forage, Omnis cubes or HayRite if the hay is iffy in your area. Maybe try Succeed paste or GastroPlus from THE in place of the omeprazole if it doesn't seem to be helping. Get in touch with Dr. Schell from Nouvelle Research or send a hair sample off to Simply Equine?
?Just throwing some things out there, super frustrating when you know you have a winner but something is off. The only thing harder than getting a horse to the top, is keeping them there. Good luck! |

| My first thought was ulcers but EPM can certainly be a factor. With the information you have given it would be about anything. i use the same vet all the time and he knows the horse ad can usually pin point something quickly.
Do you have barn cats?

| Great suggestions from others, I would change his feed, maybe something in it has changed. I would keep it simple, good alfalfa and maybe oats -no processed grains |

This^^^^. What feed? Is it made in a mill that has no medications on the property?
If this is the issue, there is no fixing the outcome. I hope the issue is something else. |
