I live in NC and think it's pretty great. Stay out of the metropolitan areas
(Raleigh/Charlotte
) and property is affordable. It's going fast though. If you don't have to work that helps as you can live wherever and not worry about commuting. We get 4 seasons. Sometimes all in the same week though ??
If you live central, you are 2-3 hours from the beach and 2-3 hours from the mountains. We get some crazy weather here and there. Further south to the coast is prone to flood
(duh
) but water pretty quickly recedes everywhere else. Not so many tornados, and the further inland you go the better off you are with hurricanes.
Barrel racing is everywhere in the state and not too bad a drive to big super shows. 7 hours to Perry Georgia Where they hold a lot of big nbha stuff. Lexington VA is about 5 hours. Great trails in the mountains, and a lot of the state parks.

We actually live in NW section of Georgia, hour north of atlanta, hour south of chattanooga. LOve the area, but we are actively looking for land up in Tennessee because of the tax situation up there, no state tax. We prefer to stay near Ooltewah, Hamilton or Bradley county. Something with some land and a view. There is slot of homes for sale but we need something less than 5000 sq ft, prefer half that size, one level. It seems everyone is building mega castles these days, and we are 63 and do not need that much space. So may just build what we need. But the Tennessee area is a great place to retire.
