I always creep the forums. I rarely post. I have a hard keeper tb, id like to put him on predominately alfalfa while stalled (he has a coastal round when turned out) I would like to know of anyone had had success with renew gold, alfalfa and this type of horse. I've fed every expensive feed on the market and would like to go as natural as possible. So would prefer renew gold, ADM Glo's selection, etc. I don't want tons of supplements and am trying to keep costs down as he is retired.

Hep me out guru's. ;-)

I would add rice bran. Its cheap and really makes a difference. I have also heard cool calories is a great concentrated , small amount, way to go.

I've had good luck with rice bran as well.

My go-to has been Farnams weight builder. It has worked wonders on several horses I've used it on.

I have a 25 yo TB gelding that is a super hard keeper.  I mix oats and ricebran, and free choice alfalfa all night and pasture during the day.  This maintains him pretty well.

We do a lot of TB horses fed as you propose. Be sure his teeth are up to speed as this is more vital in diets that depend on coastal. If you decide to feed straight rice bran in this diet, I would add a prebiotic like FORCO, which you would otherwise get in Renew Gold. Also, be sure it is stabilized rice bran, as there is a huge difference between that and raw bran. As to the Glo line of products from ADM, I was involved in the formulation of most of them. There has been some drama there in recent years, and while I have been enthusiastic about several of them (I should be), I have no recent experience with how they are currently manufactured.

Thanks ladies. That's mainly what I needed to know. Make sure I was going right direction as I'm headed to feed store now

I have a few hard keeper TB's!! I LOVE all alfalfa hay, and either LMF Showtime A or Allegra Cadence (depending on competing or time off). I also add rice bran, DAC oil and forco =] I feed 2 scoops (of LARGE plastic folger can). Good luck!! =]

Mine have done best on a quality senior feed and we only feed alfalfa.  Bought one who had been on just Renew Gold and alfalfa...wasn't impressed with his weight or coat condition.  I used up the bag they sent me home with while transitioning him to Purina Equine Senior and he gained condition and shine quickly.  He needs nothing else, is in jumper training with me and looks great.

All out TB are on 2 lb oats 2x day, 10-12 lbs alfalfa mash and all the Bermuda bay they want. They also get 1 cup ground flax.
