My best friend is selling her old barrel saddle, it's just too small for her now, and she's taken immaculate care of it for the past 10 years. Now from the title you might know where this is going. Her two cats just her saddles fenders as a scratching post and how on one side it's messed up. Now it's not terrible but you can definitely see some lines in the leather. I will never have cats near my tack for a fear like this coming true but I feel so bad for her because she doesn't know what to do or how much she needs to lower her asking price. It's an older Billy Cook made from Sulphur, OK with a 14inch seat in great condition. She was asking $800 because she was wanting $700 but now she doesn't know what to do or ask for it.

Hard to suggest anything w/o seeing pics.  they were able to dig their claws in that much?  I can't picture it.

I have seen mice urine on saddles   ewww.  I like cats around - he,he

are the fenders roughout. if they are get a wire brush, or if you have battery drill get a wire wheel and brush it will look like new. done it for a few people. amazing what a seat thats all shiney from wear looks after a wire brush.

Honestly, most Billy Cook's, even the OK ones, with no issues, just used, I see go for 400-600.

400 to 500 would be about whats its worth without seeing it. I always see the used Billy Cooks for sale around 500.. Maybe a little more or a little less.

If the fenders are roughout texture she should be able to sand it out pretty easily. If it is smoothout, try putting some ol on the scratches to make them less prominate, obiously still disclose the scratches but if they aren't bad I would just say something like this in the ad:

"Billy Cook Sulphur, OK saddle. Used but not abused. Scratches on both fenders (as pictured). Was $800, Now $600."  And try and get at least $500 out of it.

I agree with everyone so far: Resale value over $500 is asking too much for this saddle in my opinion. Unless it has no signs of use what-so-ever.

If it's roughout I doubt it would make much difference in the price.  Used is used.

This. If I was buying used it wouldn't bother me one way or the other. I have cats all over in my tack room and have never had one damage a saddle. I put saddle covers on my nice saddles but that is for the occasional hairball barf they like to leave in a seat.

I paid 350 for my saddle basically brand new. We have quit a few cats and i don't keep any of my tack out were they can play with it. That and i don't need some rodent making it a chew toy. It stays in my horse trailer then my halters are hung up in the barn.
