I saw on facebook there were 6 confirmed cases near Garden City, Kansas. We planned on going to a roping about an hour from there this weekend, so that news kind of alarmed us. EIA isn't something we pay much attention to, we just get our Coggins tests every year because we have to. I don't remember hearing about any cases in the past, so I began researching.  I just thought I'd share some information I found.

Here is a link showing state by state the positve cases for the past serveral years:

https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/animal-disease-information/horse-disease-information/equine-infectious-anemia/ct_equine_infectious_anemia

Here is the link to the specific Kansas cases. If you click on the "Updated news release 8-22-17, it goes into some better detail of how hard they think EIA is to transfer. This information eased my mind the most.:

There's typically a small number of positives every year. The reason why testing is such a big deal is because there's no cure for EIA, so nothing you can do about it other than permanent isolation or euthanasia of a horse that's truly positive. One of mine was a false positive earlier in the year, and it was a huge headache and very stressful until the state lab (TX) confirmed she was negative.

What Casualdust said, this is why its so important to have your Coggins drawn, I know alot of people think its a way for the Vets to make more money off the coggins test but thats not the case, I have seen horses with this eia and its not pretty..

I live just outside of Garden City. Thank you for sharing the information, it is pretty amazing the lack of knowledge about EIA. As you can imagine, many people have panicked, and I believe that is mostly because they haven't taken the time to educate themselves. The horses that were tested within the radius of the quarantined facility should have results back by Friday, and hopefully there will be no more positives and this will in fact be an isolated case.

From my understanding more positives have come up in this area since the last post.  I have done some research, but I am still pretty worried about attending an event in that area soon.  What are the thoughts about that?  Anyone experienced this before in other areas?
I understand isolation has been done.  Also, there is to be a news release on Monday, which perhaps will tell us more.

I'm not sure if this helps. But here's a Garden City news site's story:
http://www.gctelegram.com/news/20170910/veterinarians-horse-owners-advise-caution-with-eia

Within it it says: "all of the cases of EIA are linked to an informal horse racing facility in rural Garden City"

In a fb post from Garden City News, it talks about SPECULATION that "the source of the outbreak includes the prevalent use of performance enhancing drugs which are often injected in multiple race horses with the same needle."

There have been more positives, as well as a couple positive with piroplasmosis. Like was mentioned, all horses have been traced to the "unsanctioned, informal horse racing facility", which is the politically correct way of saying the match racing track. They have quarantined 5 facilities in 3 counties.

A state vet is coming Monday evening to have a public meeting about it, and I plan to be there. I personally have not quit hauling into town, but I know many people are afraid to go anywhere. My husband spoke with the state vet a couple of weeks ago, and based on what information he got from that conversation I feel comfortable to continue hauling. More than 1,000 horses have been tested in our area in August alone. There have been no positives at facilities neighboring the initial quarantine facility.

I'll try to give an update after the meeting if there is any new information.
