Location: Florissant CO | I am a first time baby momma, and where she is located the winters get very harsh. Between hitting lows in -30 + along with 6 + feet of snow from one storm, I do blanket on top of providing all the feed they need and supplementing grain. With the babies growing what would you all recommend on sizing? |

Location: Where the long tails flow, ND | Just measure the baby and see what it measures at now, weatherbeetas run big so you would probably be fine ordering one of those in the size it measures at :) |

We also don't blanket unless we clip for shows. Their hair stands up to trap heat inside their bodies. When a blanket is on top of the coat, the hair lays flat, allowing heat to escape. Their hair will also grow much thikcer the colder it becomes. But it won't grow with a coat over the top of it. :) |

Location: Where the long tails flow, ND | Why is blanketing so taboo? She asked for sizing. I blanket every single winter- I work my horses all winter and live in THE capital of the frozen tundra. All my horses are perfectly healthy and always have been. |

Location: North Dakota | Yes and no to the comment that blankets push the hair down allowing heat to escape. If you put a turnout sheet on a horse with a full winter coat in the dead of winter, you bet your butt that horse will be freezing because you take away their natural abilities and don't replace it with adequate insulation... Although I can tell you from several first hand experiences that even a horse with a full ND winter coat and its shivering on one of our bone chilling cold mornings (without a blanket), you put that blanket on and they stop shivering. A blanket will keep them warmer but in the end it all comes down to the individual horse. Some thrive blanketed and some don't.
My mare would die without a blanket.. my 24 year old gelding will attack you if you try to put one on.

| Schneiders blankets are very adjustable, plus they have a wide belly strap, instead of two nylon straps. That's what we used last winter for our baby. The straps on either side of the neck were very helpful to allow it to continue to fit him throughout the winter as he had growth spurts. I was lucky enough to buy 2 almost brand new ones for $50/ea. Best way I could have spent 100 bucks! https://www.sstack.com/5-fit-turnout-horse-blankets/
We hit -40C pretty regularly, as well has have lots of wet/sleety days. Sometimes blankets are required. I agree, some horses need them and some dont. We have a few that have pretty much never worn a blanket in their lives, but some that start shivering and loose all their weight almost immediately. They get blankets. Its not like I enjoy dropping cash on blankets because for no reason..

Location: California | I just ordered my baby a blanket to have on hand when its supposed to be cold and wet. My two rideable horses have trace clips so they get blanketed. If we all get to be warm and dry so does the colt! He measured at a 60" so I orded a 60" that adjusts up to a 64". Hasn't come in yet so we will see how it fits when it does! |

I guess I dont feel like he's that big...but I havent been around a ton of babies at this age either. His sire is 16 hands and his dam is around 14.3. Im hoping for him to be a decent sized horse but I hope I'm not growing a monster LOL.
