| Can anyone tell me pros and cons of stock trailers? Double doors or just one big single door? Any information is helpful. I just got rid of my reverse load lq.. I just need something to take horses (including mares w/babies) to vet and one day shows. Not looking for lq. I do want the tack/dressing room though. |

| i find a single rear door to be easier - easy to trap something in without having to close 2 doors. That comes from cattle catching not horses so much but with babies may come in handy. |

I like the double doors/gates myself..
The one I am looking at has the double doors. It has the typical stock trailer latches at the bottom and top. My only concern is my horses scratching themselves getting off. There is no pole in the middle, just two latches... Have you had any problems, if you have a trailer with doors like this? |

My main reason for this is the wind! I can't tell you how many times I have been knocked over by a single door that caught in the wind and flung open too hard.
I would prefer a stock trailer at this point over my slant LQ... they seem easier to maintain and are just built to last forever. The downside for me would be everyone and their cousin asking to borrow it for cattle hauling. So I don't think I will be going down this road anytime soon.  |

Ha ha ha, I forgot about the wind catching the gate, and that is another pain right there, on my Featherlit I have the large single door and its a pain I have to make sure I tie it back befor I start to load are unload, the wind catches it every time it seems. Got to be careful it dont slam shut on my horses when I open it. |

Look at your standard 7ft tall slant load horse trailers with
4ft walls w/rails and no drop downs or windows. Same on
rear gate(s).. and take out the slant panels and get
a small tack room.
Just add a couple of vents on the roof for heat ventilation.
One over front of box and one in center of box .. the rails above
the 4 ft walls also aid in venting the trailer.
As you know with horses you need a small tack room and stock
trailers storage is only in the goose neck.
Last thing you want to happen is for a baby to lay down and get a leg
thru the wall of a tube built cattle trailer or rear gate. Or if you have
a kicker... they can get in trouble too.
Stock trailers are usually 6' or at most 6 1/2 ft tall and have one center
gate up in the box.
There is nothing worse than running into a winter storm with an open
stock trailer loaded with horses or have a semi pass you during a
rain storm.
The chill or wet factor is bad news.
I like the single rear door and 7' tall since my horses are rather large
and I never get a stirrup hung up loading or unloading and the full gate
helps load the babies if they are on the right side of the mare and
I can use it like a squeeze chute if needed to block the baby from
backing up. My mares will jump in a trailer without leading them
in and baby will usually jump in at the same time with minimum
urging. Tie a 3 ft piece of binder twine on the gate to control
it if you are a small person ..

Location: Roping pen | Biggest issue with the split or double doors, is that once the hinges get worn, the doors are a little difficult to line up the latches. We had an old S&H and it was almost impossible to close the double doors due to worn hinges promoting gate sag. Once in a while a horse or cow would try to get out while you are opening the 2nd door/gate which caused a few problems.
But I would sure buy another. |

I have had 3 stock trailers with the double gates and they all had the latches at the botton of the gates, If needed more room to load cattle I would open both gates to load but with my horses I just used one side and never had a problem with them bumping themselves even saddled up I would load them.. The bars were rounded so no scratching of my horses.. I perfer the double gates/doors over a large single door, the single doors are a pain I think and just to big to close fast if needed..What brand of stock trailer are you looking at? Do you have a picture of it so we can see what type of gates its has, or just tell us what brand and I can look it up..In fact I'm thinking of getting another Gooseneck and it will have the double doors/gates, so much easier and I can put my dogs in it if ever needed and having the double doors works so much better so simple to get in and out with just opening one gate.
It is a Platinum! 7'6 wide. 8' wides are so hard to find with the tack room! Does anyone have any experience with Exiss trailers?? Specifically their stock trailers... |
