| Maybe it's just me, but YUK. A snaffle is all you need sometimes! Although I prefer dogbone snaffles to single breaks. |

Location: California | Snaffle, to a snaffle, then maybe a snaffle after that. I have a snaffle bit obsession and prefer a simple O-ring snaffle on anything amd everything. I put them in a simple shank snaffle if I want to transition into a shank bit. All my horses ride in an O-ring snaffle at any time, doing anything, at any age. Personal preference I suppose. When I rope on some I eventually go with a simple chain bit. |

There are a number of companies that sell these plastic/rubber mouth piece starter bits. You can find them lots of places including your local tack store pretty easily if you want to go that way. A simple, well-made o-ring snaffle always seemed fine to me though. |

Location: Idaho | As someone that , well, thats what I do for a living, is colt starting. I ride them all in a locked loose ring snaffle made by Dave Elliot. Only reason I move out of it is to get more shoulder countrol, but when I do move out of it , they are soft in their face and have a solid foundation going. I really like my Elliot draw gag 3 piece (MPC 19) and I think it has a lot of feel and is forgiving.
But currently, every horse I am running is running in a loose ring snaffle, a locked snaffle and a draw gag made by Elliot, they are all 1D horses too. |

| I start everything in a snaffle, and I prefer a dogbone mouth. I usually transition out of a snaffle to something with a short shank, and keep the dogbone mouth. I have a teardrop shank bit, or a tender touch that I really like. I transition when I feel like they need to go to something else. At some point, they all have to learn to ride in a shanked bit with a curb. I will go back to a snaffle occasionally or for tuning, or if a horse just really prefers the snaffle that's what they stay in. I recently had a trainer suggest the 5 bit, so I'm going to look into getting one of those to give it a try. |
