| I've got a pretty good infestation of rats and the cats can't keep up. My barn has a space between downstairs and upstairs and the rats know where to live.
We can keep the cats out of the barn for a few weeks, does anyone have any suggestions on what to use? I've read about 1st generation, 2nd generation and some home remedies and want some feedback on this.

| Strong snap traps and a stronger stomach. Secure every possible feed source. Consider consulting a professional exterminator if they're that bad - you may be missing something. |

| It's not like they meet me at the door...but what we found last winter is in the stored stacks of hay that didn't get messed with daily, they would nest at the back on the bottom layer. Those little suckers are apparently very smart. |

Location: Southeast Louisiana | You could get a couple of nice sized rat snakes and turn them loose in there. Long term, they'll do a much better job than the cats. If you aren't bothered by snakes. |

I hate snakes, but they sure do keep the mice/rats in check. At our old place we were infested with rats. It was horrible, they were in the walls in our apartment as well. We had cats there. Here we have 3+ ft black snakes, no cats. I have lived here 4 years and I have only ever seen a mouse once in the barn. |

Location: Kansas | I would try rat traps but being very careful to set them where the cats can't get in them. Snakes would be out for me.......they would feast on my little toad critters who keep the fly and general bug population to practically zero.

Location: Peg-Leg Julia Grimm | Just One Bite and lots of it. I never had a rat problem until I got some hay that was stored most of the winter in someone else's barn. All of a sudden I had rats coming out of everywhere. I tried setting out just three bars of Just One Bite but that didn't seem to phase them. So I set out 6 of the bars. Finally! That did them in. The cats won't mess with the poison. But dogs will. So don't put it where your dogs or horses can reach it. |

| When my parents bought their place, the barn was infested with rats. They got a ferret and it cleared the buggers out in a hurry. Watch them around cats though, theirs started killing the barn cats when it got through the rats. |
