Can anybody tell me their experience with half hood blinkers. Im cconsidering putting them on my barrel horse. He has been racing for about 2 yrs. He is so nervous about going thru the gates to inside. He acts like something is going to jump out and eat him. Once he is inside he's fine runs the pattern good. You can nudge him in but he will not going in faster then a walk. Thank you in advice.

Sounds like your race horse has been the victim of being shocked
or struck with a whip when being gate trained to leave in a hurry.

He is now leery of close quarters and anticipating a shock or a whack
while entering the arena thinking he is being loaded into the
starting gates at the track.

You can dope him up but it won't solve the problem.

Time is your best friend if you work on settling him down by
killing him with kindness. Just make sure you are not all
nerved up and transmitting your fears or anticipation of trouble to
the horse.

Either get to arena's early or if some are close by ... go over and
take a feed bucket, hay sack and grooming tools and your tack.

Hand lead him into the gate area and do not tie him up hard and fast...
you do not want to have a wreck. Be ready to spend an hour with him.

You are going to feed him while brushing on him .. interrupt him and
lead him in to the arena and out of the arena and back to the bucket
or hay sack.
Do the same with each piece of tack you put on him.
You are going to let him munch for 5-10 minutes for each item ..
Do this hand walking routine until he is a dead head and no quirkiness ..

No pussyfooting around ... jump up and down .. wave arms and
act crazy at different points in the alley gate areas ... and brush
on him to erase any anxiety he may have. Make sure you brush
his breast bone and ribs underneath ... this is the first place
a horse will tension up. Even pat him under there with rhythm.

Surprise him and load him up and go home.

Next day .. do the same .. if he is settled in ...
then mount while you are half way in and out of the gate area ..
ride him 10 ft ... turn around back to the bucket.. dismount ..
and let him munch for 5-10 minutes. Do this towards the arena
and the back door. You want him to have his mind on the bucket.

Increase your distance till you are in the arena and then back to bucket
or outside the barn and back to the bucket. This now includes your
sitting on him and doing nothing or just walking around in the arena
or on the outside for 5 minutes. Then back to the bucket.

You get the drift .. it may take a month doing this 2-3 times a week
for both of you to become lazy and big time buddies ...

Teaching him to be lazy equals no fear or anticipation.

That seems feasible since he doesn't do this in an outside arena or at home. He doesn't do it if it's just us practing at the barn. Literally it is only at the show. The difference is the people standing just inside and the annocing. I didn't know that's how they trained them to break from the gate.

Only the bad trainers or the ones wanting to take a short cut train this way. I good ones don't. The good ones will tell you that they can make a horse dumb fast enough as it is without resorting to those poor training methods. They are simply trying to create a walking time bomb that they hope explodes at the right moment. That's why sounds like a ropin chute clanking open, horses running up behind them if you are warming up on a track at a fairgrounds or crowds are such a trigger for an OT horse. Those are the 3 noises most associated with 'run' in their minds.

Agree with SKM here.  Shortcuts make for non cooperative horses. And crazy ones at that.
