What do you look for when purchasing an older broodmare?? I am a newbie to the breeding aspect of barrel racing so please be honest!

Papers look quite nice. I personally would not be concerned about this age, if the mare has been producing with no current issues. Price would be a factor considering number of offspring left, which is unknown. However, it could be quite a few.

I don't mess with them unless they are currently in foal and foaled the last year as well. Of course it is no guarantee still but makes me feel better. I am finding more and more that people in the horse business are such liars. I haven't bought a broodmare in yrs that was exactly as she was represented...my last one had a needle tip broke off and floating around in her coffin joint. And her cribs only when stalled is a laugh. This girl will cross a 3 section pasture to crib on a fence post. Love her though so we are dealing with it.

I would definitely have a breeding soundness exam done by a reputable repro vet. My mare of the same age never had a foal, and we couldn't get her pregnant (at least by SI) because of cysts. I had her any ways and she is a lifer for me, so while it was heartbreaking, it wasn't as disappointing as if I had purchased her for that exact purpose.

I would also have a breeding soundness exam done, have her cultured, and try to obtain as much information from the sellers as possible as to her breeding history. Depending on how many foals she has had before, her ability to get in foal, and given her age, she may be a candidate for embryo transfer.

If this mare has had some foals and passes a breeding soundness exam, I think you would have a very nice broodie.
