Currently have a two year old with a severe bone cyst in his stifle, with associated cartilage damage.  Very reputable lameness/performance vet has recommneded putting him down, he has done multiple procedures and therapies on these types of cases with little to no results. He did say that with a year turned out he may make a trail/ranch horse, but not being broke, it is not very likely.  I hope for you that a hock has a different prognosis.

Location is HUGE on a cyst-  stifles are the worst because they usually are in a high-friction area and it will cause a lot of pain.  That being said, we used to do a lot of surgeries on horses with stifle cysts; vet would dig the cyst out with a scope and inject stem cells.  Some were successful, others weren't.   A well known breeder gave my boss (vet) a nice yearling stud colt cuz he had a cyst in his stifle.  Boss did the surgery and he was sound up until heavy training his 4 year old year.
Hocks usually have a better prognosis if they are in the lower joint because there is little movement.   If it's upper joint then you are probablyin the same prognosis as a stifle:/
