| I will weigh in because I have to do the same. My good mare/cripple/only child gets the good stuff and the others get the "good." I do it by need. Does this horse need it or is it an extra? Am I maintaining an issue or maintaining a healthy horse? Maintenance vs prevention. | |

| What do you feel needs to be supplemented? That’s the first question to ask.
For us, we feed Purina Ultium but much less than the reccomended servings. We like the fixed formula, caloric density, and low NSC. We wanted to supplement to fill in the “gaps” that would be left by feeding less than recommended. We had 1 horse in particular who was a “hard keeper” and was actually getting close to the feed bag serving. At the suggestion of our chiropractor we tried him on Platinum (regular not CJ). Amazing results on him and we started the whole barn on it. 4 lbs is the reccomended feeding of Ultium and all of ours are maintaining great on less than 1lb 2x’s a day and 1 scoop of Platinum.

My good barrel horse and the rope horse my husband hauls hard both get Actiflex 4000 for joints - I think we pay around $0.45/oz and feed 1-2 oz/head.

One mare is 10 and she has never had a soundness issue in her life. And passes all her flex tests from the vet. My other mare is 15 and is retired but she has a lot soundness problems but since retiring her this year she is a lot more sound than she was with all the injections and meds. I think simply just from taking pressure off her.

From this, I'm thinking the good stuff for the 15yo you still ride, something preventative for the 10yo if she has no issues, and either previcox or MSM for the retired horse IF you feel she needs something. The MSM is cheap and has been proven to reduce inflammation in arthritis, the previcox would be basically a daily pain Med. Also not crazy expensive but unless she's not sound as a pasture ornament- she prob doesn't need it.
My good mare (only child) gets the 6-way. My other 3 are young horses (2yos and a weanling) they just get a vitamin/mineral. Nothing for digestive or joint yet because my feed has digestive support and none of them have done anything to make me think they need a joint sup. | |

You have to have a reason for wanting a supplement. That's why they ask what you'd like to see.
Are you looking for joint support? Weight increase? Add vitamins because your hay or grain is lacking? Do they need better feet? Do they have poor hair coats and are they ribby??
I feed THE supplements because they are cost effective and give my horses support in joint, weight, digestive, and hoof areas.
Picking a supplement has to fit you and your horses. A company has to ask what you are looking for in order to determine if their supplement would fit the horses needs you'd like to feed it to. Otherwise, you're wasting your money and could potentially give them a bad review because you didn't see results in the area you were most concerened about. | |

I like how my horses look with the Platinum CJ, I've been using it for probably 5 months now, but I cannot get them to eat it. That's the only reason I looked to switch to MVP. It sits in the bottom of their pans if I don't mix a liquid in with their grain to get it to stick, and even then I'll still find them leaving that last little bit of grain and CJ.
My friend has her horses on MVP so I grabbed a few pellets to see if my horses would even eat it and my pickiest eater practically inhaled my hand.
Now here's the kicker, upon further research the MVP has a pretty substantial amount more of joint stuff than the CJ, plus the MVP is cheaper. Couldn't believe they already had the comparison all laid out for me.

I compared it to Oxygen products. And it had more of everything. When I priced oxygen compairsd to MVP it was more expensive per day. Why pay more to get less lol. | |

Location: Illinois | For me as far as results I saw are things that you have to really know about your horse. For mine he moved better, got his hind end under him again, had more stamina in workouts, and his breathing sounded better. He's a roarer, his flap is partially paralyzed and he no longer sounds like a freight train just loping around. My lasix dosage dropped as well, which is another plus. For my 24 year old that's on a half dose, he was hardly ride able before. He's had 2 torn tendons, torn ligament, and crazy thin hoof walls & soles, & just couldn't move well. He's on half dose now and moves really well now. You can tell in his movement and in his eyes that he's just more comfortable in general. The other horse that's on it I just got a couple weeks ago, so she was just started on it. My biggest thing is the significance it made on their joint fluid, the same vet has been injecting them for years. He knows their history and when he says the difference in the consistency of the fluid is greatly increased, you know it's working. That for me was the absolute confirmation I needed to decide that it was worth it for me. It's a 4.5 hour drive to that vet so if I can make fewer trips because of a supplement, heck yeah! Plus for me they also wouldn't eat the Platinum, most would be left in the feeder every time. I tried to wet it so it would stick to the grain and they just chose not to eat any of it at all.
