and my mare turned into an idiot in a week. I trail rode Sunday, Sept 23. She was fine. I have been so pleased with her lately. She had turned the proverbial corner and I was enjoying her. On Thursday, I mixed a batch of voodoo with hemp seeds as a base instead of chia. On Friday, farrier set her first set of fronts since I've had her. (She is 12, and I've had her a year.) I rode in the pasture on Sunday, Sept 30. She was Mrs. Bucky McBuckington. I have a large oval track with three 30 ft circles that I can walk/trot/lope to the left or right. She bucked in the straights, but she REALLY bucked in the circles. She would dump her front end when we hit the circle and buck all the way around it. I tried twice on both leads. I finally took her to the round pen where she continued her antics. She would lope the perimeter but buck or kick out with both hind feet if I asked for a smaller - but not small - circle. I rode yesterday in the round pen and she was better to the right (her stong side) but not to the left. She would hit panic mode when asked for a 20 foot circle.
SO
Is it the front shoes?        OR       Is it the hemp seeds?

?I can't find any swelling. She tracks fine. Walks sound. Rides sound. No soreness that I can find and I am an equine massage therapist.

I have never used hemp so can't comment about that. (At least for horses, or ingesting via the intestinal tract.)

Is there any way you can saddle her up exactly the same as she was before and lunge her on a line so you can see if she is sore/moving funny due to the shoes.

Hope you can find out what's going on...that doesn't sound like fun at all.

I lunged her under saddle before I rode Monday. She is moving, striding, tracking normally. She rode better today. I can't help but think she didn't like the way the shoes felt. From what I can find online, unless she has an intolerance for hemp, she's not getting enough to cause a behavior change. It's just a base for the herbs she has been on for months. I switche from chia because of potassium concerns in a gelding I have.

Pull her off the herbs first. Aside from the chia to hemp swap did you open any new bags of herbs? Possible what you thought you were getting isn’t what you got? How’s the gelding doing?

Any sore spots when you palpate her back? Possibility of a slip or fall in turnout or even getting temporarily cast in a stall that would have tweaked her? The most major issues our gelding has from kissing spines seemingly appeared overnight (minor issues we had decided were β€œjust him” had been there). Maybe a visit to the chiropractor if one is handy.

That’s where I would start. If you like the way the shoes are put on I wouldn’t mess with those right now. If this is still going on at the next reset, discuss with farrier.

What kind of shoes?

Also, all horses react to things different. Just because hemp shouldn't make her crazy doesn't mean it won't. I had flax make a horse dead lame, shouldn't have but it did.

All sort of wonderful things. It's the next miracle seed alongside tumeric and garlic. It is not reported to cause "munchies" in horses nor has she taken up cigarettes. According to Google, the ancient Greeks used it for various ailments in horses and up until the 20th century cannabis/hemp was in most colic treatments.
