Totally outrageous for the AQHA to let something like this happen. Biggest show of the year for them top horses in the world competing in the ground is so bad that horses are falling and slipping right and left. My best advice to you wherever is running the show and is in charge of the ground is to get a hold of Chuck Dunn he'll fix your ground and the girls will be proud to run on it otherwise word like this is going to spread like wildfire and who's going to want to go and run on ground that you could possibly lose your horse or injure you and your horse on? My heart is breaking for Sharon and for all of those who love this horse and for all who had to witness it it had to be horrific. Prayers of comfort to her.

I can't think of an AQHA show that I have been to, that has a clue what a barrel horse needs as far as ground. And like I mentioned on facebook, I have no idea if they use the same arena-but barrels, rail events and reining all require TOTAL opposite types of ground conditions to allow each event to show at it's best abilities. It's not something that can be worked and ready within a day.  But for all I know maybe they do have different arenas.

They do have 2 arenas there but the reining, speed and roping events were in the same one.

It is so frustrating to me that they are doing this in a venue with a proven track record with other producers of good ground conditions that can handle thousands of runs over a long weekend. My AQHA membership is up for renewal and I've decided I'm not going to renew it or my QH Journal subscription and I'm going to email AQHA and let them know.

Further, the NFR ground improvement last year resulted in amazing runs from world class horses. Imagine what could happen if AQHA put some effort into the world show ground, it would allow these horses to be the best they can be, and that benefits the AQHA as an organization and our sport in general.

I like the idea of not renewing, and letting AQHA know exactly why.

Ditto. I would like to call the AQHA and let them know my thoughts. They have had a history of putting western pleasure, trail, reining, cutting, etc.  before the speed events. In the early 90's they did it.

They (AQHA) should be be embarrassed and ashamed of what they did. It is awful and heartbreaking to so many people.

You do realize that the dirt is brought in for each event. I may not be the same dirt that is used for barrel races probably is no the same as what is used for the AQHA show. To be honest, I have been to several breed world shows. The ground has not been the best at any of them. Also, I went to a show to qualify for a world show and they used a smart phone to time barrels and poles. Seriously

Even if it is brought in, the good stuff is still available somewhere here and AQHA has a responsibility to find it. Sounds like you have firsthand knowledge of it, but it sounds like a logistical and expensive pain in the a$$ to bring the ground in and out for every event. I drive by the fairgrounds 5 days a week to work and more often than not it's packed with horse trailers. Can't imagine having to bring dirt in and out everytime.

Sadly, it doesn't surprise that they've timed a QH show with a cell phone. I've had my own experiences at them, including warming up and hearing one of the judges say to the other, "Now, what are the rules for speed events?". Nice.   I guess we're very fortunate in barrel racing that it's become as big as it has that we have so many other great events to run at that aren't affiliated with breed shows.

Until barrel racers stand up for themselves, nothing is going to change as to ground conditions. I know this will require the girls to just pack up and go home and will entail losing money, but those top horses are too hard to replace, IMO. It may require boycotting an association, or a petition like for the NFR. Associations may decide to just let the barrel racers go rather than make the ground safe for the horses, but I'd be ok with that. I am not talking perfect ground, I am talking safe ground, ground that MOST horses can be safe running in, not just the ones that take care of themselves or on the other end, horses that depend on the ground to hold them. Just my opinion, though.

Wanted to add I am very sorry Sharin and Foose had this happen. My heart goes out to her.

The thing is, the barrel racers have spoke several times & was promised they (AQHA) would look into making the ground better, but, every year, it seems to get worse. I know several that have quit going for this reason including myself. Not worth it. There is a petition on change.org now for everyone to sign & get this unexcusable crap ground & making it better. If the NFR can get this done, surely AQHA can as well. Than again......they don't really give 2 s**** about the barrel horses. Very sad what happen to Sharin's horse. She was on her way to being one of the best of the best. My heart aches for her.

But they also put basically what amounts to a clay pad under all 3 barrels and the end pole, then wouldn’t let them break up the hard pan. So even with the ground they brought in, it still could have been maintained in a way that made it MUCH safer. They just chose not to.

As I said the risk is they could just drop the speed events, but really, why would we care if they did? The horses don’t deserve such callous disregard for their safety that these people have. The bad ground and the way they treat speed event people is why I only competed at a few AQHA shows. As for rodeos, if they had dangerous ground, I didn’t go back.

I'm sorry for the lose of Sharin's horse.

AQHA is all about the money and their focus is on the big ticket classes and events, WP, Halter, Reining etc. speed events have never been in the spotlight or received much acknowledgement. Unfortunately, trying to accommodate different footing for every event is going to cost them money, which I don't foresee them wanting to spend, unless its for reining or one of the other big classes. It would be better if they allowed speed events to be held at a nearby rodeo arena where footing might be more accommodating.

Unfortunately when you own QH's and if you breed, buy and sell you need to keep your membership. I maintain a membership but I no longer participate in their shows or sponsor them in any way other.

I’m with you. I pay my membership just because we have futurity horses and I need them in my name. The AQHA shows I have been to in the past didn’t pay worth a darn, had horrible ground and worse people. I can’t understand why go? To win a trophy and a ribbon?! I understand the prestige of being and AQHA world champion, but at what cost? I’d rather go where the win was worth something. That trophy doesn’t buy much feed or diesel. To each their own, but they aren’t for me.

That’s my point exactly! LG hauled whateva to a few of them and I hated them. The only reason we ever went because she needed so many points to make her babies Brazilian export eligible. If I had to guess I’d venture to say that’s why Sharin was there too. Just speculation, but you dang sure don’t go to them dang things to get rich. I refused to run Whateva at the world show. She got enough points during the year thank goodness. I went one year and it was enough for me! The peanut rollers were the most unfriendly, conceited individuals I had ever dealt with.

There’s plenty of other organizations running quality races.

The points needed for export sucks though...
