Need Help Shutting down after Run
What About Beer?

I got a new horse that is 9 and has been running for about 3 years, I'm having a hard time with getting him to shut down after the timers. He is a free runner and I don't want to just bit him up for the shut down. Any drill suggestions? TIA

Are you running back in to an alley or no alley?
A good stop always starts outside of the arena. Here in So Cal we don't have many alleys so I've had to teach some horses from Texas/Oklahoma to stop without relying on an alley. I know some people want them to always stop straight. I actually prefer them to run to the back of the pen and slightly turn off as to not jar their hocks any more than barrel racing itself already does. I teach them to shorten their stride when I sit up and then turn off at the back of the pen. I teach this in slow work. I just make it another part of the pattern so they learn what to do at the end.
Whenever I've had a horse who had a good stop outside of the arena but would hold on to the bit and wouldn't stop in a run, it was generally a soreness issue or they were bleeding inside.

I had an older gelding that didn't want to stop in the alley and he was broke to death. Had his hocks injected and no longer had a problem.
Before I had his hocks injected, I used a Bozo Hack. A few bumps and he stopped.
