I was wondering how often people are working their 3yo futurity prospects. What's a happy medium to keep them sound and fit?

Mine isn't a futurity prospect, but she is a 3yo. She's a foundation bred, free range mare that had never even been touched before I got her two months ago, and I've worked with her about 25-30 times total. She is now halter broke, been in a trailer once (to get her home), lunges, picks up her feet, and I've been on her twice bareback with a halter. I'll keep working with her through the winter, and send her to the trainer next spring. We are doing a lot of groundwork, lunging to keep her fit, and we will just be continuing to ride bareback for awhile, and then graduate to the saddle. Nothing too strenuous here, but then again, she isn't a futurity prospect.

mine is a june baby.he turned 3.  I had 90 days put on him one month off then he shipped cattle for 2 months.  I rode him untill middle of october and not since.  I'll leave him turned out untill winter is over and will get with it.........

he should have about 5-6 months off.  He was riding really well and he is very easy going also.........

I'm excited

As much as I can! Which usually means 3-5 days a week. And I load her up and bring her to wherever I'm going, even if I don't exhibition her I at least ride her around. She is a little sponge and as sound as a bell, I can't see any reason to get off her. She literally loves to work, can't wait to start adding more speed. I did set up poles this week after lightly patterning her on them last year, she literally squealed, grabbed her a$$ and wanted to FLY through them. So we work o different things besides barrels. Hope to futurity her as a five year old.

I don't have one right now but we ride ours 5 days or so if we need them. Since we wait to start them as 3's they do great. 30 days and we take them back and go to ranching. Mostly lots of long trotting up and down hills and across country, then slow boring walk behind cattle.

Work schedule really messes with my ability to ride, but I am very fortunate that I have a mature 3YO who doesn't get stupid if she hasn't been ridden. I try to ride every other day. This is her yesterday exhibitioning:

I recently purchased one they decided not to futurity with and she's had about 80 days on her now off and on since March. She can fall apart if pushed too hard too fast and she is too nice to push to futurity. She acts like a mature horse and I can stay off her for 2 months and get on and rides fine. I have a few friends with futurity colts that are 3 and they're all running and pretty finished, they've all been running the pattern all year now. Mostly just get ridden 5 days a week for conditioning and fixing any problems they might have during expo runs. They all say if they're not ready to run competitively by now they're way behind. I think one is just fast loping right now though. To each their own I think. I know one that's been running 1D times in times expos and he's 2

Not often LOL. Usually at 3 they get ridden 2-3 times a week lightly - checking cows, seeing the sights, just getting exposed to things but not really working.
We have a 2 coming 3yo that only has 15-20 rides on him currently, and has been turned out for 3 months. So he'll spend 2018 just going everywhere and checking out the sights. We don't get in a hurry obviously LOL.

We ride ours about 3 or 4 times a week! Not much pattern work just long trotting and sight seeing just like the mature horses get.

I broke mine out at the tail end of April. Rode her about every other day and now its just whenever I can with the weather which usually means about once per week and sat/sun. She will get a few months off here when the weather really gets ugly. But I am not entering her for futurity. We've just been working collection and balance and just getting her broke. Do trail rides and down the road. Hauled her a few times this summer to see the sites and putz around.
